Not a bad theme but what about all of us that live outside the US?

07/22/2002 03:09:55 AM · #2
I agree! It should have rather been "Corporate World" or something.
As I live in beautiful Cape Town, I would have loved to send you my input. What's the chances of changing it?

Hmm... corporate america... as someone from outside the US, I'm tempted to submit a photo of the current homepage of DPC, as that illustrates the egotistic self-centredness of the US quite nicely ;oP

On a slightly more serious note, this challenge is impractical for the majority of people outside the US, and should be reconsidered - the suggestion above to change it to 'corporate world' is far better, IMHO :o)

This is not done. After such an open theme like " Free Study", something so specific to a country??

Corporate America huh?... now is that meant to be corporate United States of America... or corporate North America. Either way it's only directed at a portion of the people on this site.

I dont live in the US... and I dont have access to Corporate America. How bout we make this a global theme... so the people outside the US will feel invited to partake in this week's challenge.

I'm from Germany so this affects me too. But I think it is possible to meet the challenge when you live outside the US. Corporate America sprawls around the world ;-) McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Levis, ...
So it's not impossible. But I think it's harder and thus a little unfair. So I also vote for renaming it to "Corporate World". This would also allow photos on the globalization theme.

well we should express what we feel in the photo we are submitting on this challenge... I live outside of US, I live in the arab world.

Well I can forsee there being some hostility and many cynical shots about "corporate america" if the challenge remains so. Might upset some people...

Hmm. Let's suppose for the sake of argument that I got some great shots at an anti capitalism demo and caught some protestors burning an American flag against the backdrop of Starbucks & Niketown getting their windows put in. I think a number of people whose opinions I respect would score it on its artistic/photographic merits. My guess is that a lot more people would be upset by the picture and vote it down.

Now if I can only spark a small riot in the next 6 1/2 days I can put my theory to the test ;)

Nice imagination.

I don't live in the United States either, however since I live in a touristy town I might just be able to ask a lovely American tourist if I can borrow a "dime" or two or perhaps raid their backpack for an American flag...mmm just a thought though, this could be fun.

You could alway shoot something symbolic like a black octopus. (only half joking) rotten egg? sinking ship? play money in the fireplace? For sale/backrupsy signs.

Morning all. aelith

This will cut down on the submissions for sure. Voting time will be less. A good theme for the US, not easy at all for those outside the US.

I do live in the US, and can't help but agree with the comments thus far. Seems like the self-centered view I know all to well.

I completely understand the feelings in this. I for one honestly don''t feel this was meant to be against anyone or their country. I believe it was a oversight. As you know, Drew and Langdon get a LOT of challenge ideas put to them. They''ve both been really busy with the site and their REAL lives. This is done for US not them. Maybe we should not get upset just yet. Give them time to get up this morning and see this and I am thinking they might fix the issue and change it to Corporate WORLD :) They certainly aren''t self centered.

I dunno if I agree that this is too difficult for those outside the US. First of all, I KNOW I could do this challenge FAR more easily in Munich, where I just spent a week, than in the small town I live in here in the US.

Secondly, ignoring the US-centric name applied to the challenge, "Corporate America" isn't much different than "Corporate France" or "Corporate England".

American corporate culture is so invasive that it is available to see in every country in the world -- almost without exception (and I am sure that we have very few submitters from North Korea!) -- and so this seems a reasonable challenge to me.
