I'm a new owner of the Canon Rebel and am a little confused about the resolution sizes. I am new to photography as a whole so I don't know much about film photography. I believe the DSLR are trying to simulate film SLR's as close as possible.

On my old point & shoot the pictures were the same sizes as a monitor display {ie. 640 x 480, 1024 x 768...basically a 4:3 ratio}.

Now on the Canon Digital Rebel I have a resolution of 3072 x 2048 or a 3:2 ratio. What are the common resolution sizes to be sized down for internet viewing? Was this done so as to more resemble film photography?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can set me on the right path.

You may have to crop if you want to make the photo fit the screen exactly.

I just resize one edge. The software automatically adjusts the other. And I leave it at that.

You'll like the new 3:2 format. It makes for 4x6" prints straight out of the camera. No more cropping just to get a good print. (although I often still do, if I'm in a hurry it helps to have it preformatted)

Yeah, I found that too about my Rebel....Just have to resize it in PSCS or other....you will be fine...of course you must set the resolution to what out put you want for print sizes etc.

Here is a tutorial on how to resize for DPC...and can be used to help in resizeing in general...tutorial here

if you are just sharing pics on the web for general display purposes with friends and family I would go with a 640x??? ( i think its 640x427) size, or maybe an 800x??? and set the quality down a little so the file size is between 80k and 150k, no real need for anything bigger for "general viewing".

General viewing is for low to medium quality like what i do on my web site. but the pics are still clear and good.
Some recent shots

the new ratio on your rebel is the same ratio as 35mm negatives.

point and shoots use a different ratio because its easier to get prints and frames for an 8x10 vs an 8x12
