Good morning to all...I am new to this forum...actually new to photography also. I used to use point-and-shoot cameras and after I met my boyfriend, who has been into photography for a long time and has tons of different cameras and lenses, I have gotten more into photography, not just point-and-shoot of the kids. He has bought me my first "real" camera and am having a lot of fun with it. I am always up for learning new things and constructive criticism is always wanted. Most of my photos that I will be entering will be raw with very minimal editing, if any, as I am not familiar with any of the photo editing suites out there, but I am slowly learning (thanks to my very patient boyfriend).

When I say my next new adventure I have gone from working in an office setting to being a stay-at-home mom of 4 children to staying at home (with the kids) and working as a medical transcriptionist concurrently to currently a full-time student learning to be a sign language interpreter, and now learning photography.

I have been looking at quite a few different profiles to see what types of photos others are taking and I must say I have seen some pretty impressive work and hope to learn to be as good as some of you out here :)

Have a good day :) Tanya

Welcome, Tanya! You've taken a huge bite of the New! And you've definitely come to the right place to learn about photography. Don't be afraid to reach out for help, ask questions, etc. Here's a thread with a bunch of useful information.

First piece of advice: make sure the time and date of your camera are correct!!

Welcome aboard Tanya! Another great way to get your feet wet is to participate in DPC's Side Challenges and Tournaments. It just another great way to learn new techniques or focus on a photo theme where participating folks give and receive feedback.

Welcome, Tanya. This is an amazing place to learn and grow as a photographer. Keep entering challenges and you will be surprised how quickly your photos improve -- and you may make a few friends along the way. Keep an open mind and try not to take any scores or comments personally.

You found the right place: a lot of fun and tons of things to learn :)

Hi Tanya!
From you first post, it looks like you have the right attitude to enjoy your time here, and it looks like you will be an asset to your little on line community.
I hope that we can be of benefit to your photo aspirations as well.
The side challenges are a good way to build a portfolio as you make friends and share information and comments on photos. Commenting is very useful to learn what it is that you like or dislike about the photos you are seeing, so that you can incorporate those observations into your shooting style.
Thanks for being here.

Hello there, Tanya.
DPC is a great place to learn, but the amount you learn will be the amount you put into challenges and taking part in the community. The forums, in particular, will probably answer any question you can ask, so feel free to ask away after conducting a search (most questions have already been hashed out a bit).

It's an immensely helpful community, and the comments are perhaps the best aspect. If you don't get many comments, you can also post your image after a challenge and ask for additional feedback. If you request a comment from the Critique Club, be aware that there aren't a huge number of people doing the critiques and it may take them some time to get to an entry of yours (every week the queue gets cleared after each challenge ends, so if we miss you one challenge, we might get you on another one).

Definitely check out the How'd They Do That section, as well as the Tutorials.

I checked out the full sized image of the late 40's Dodge truck. That's a good find, and using the f11 got the details from the foreground to the horizon.
You may find that you run out of portfolio space soon unless you post smaller sized files. Generally 640 to 800 pixels on the longest side is the norm here, unless it is something special that you want to display large. It's not required, but it will allow you to have a much larger portfolio if you are comfortable with smaller images posted. If you do happen to run out of space, then there is an option to buy more when it happens. Challenge entries do not count against your portfolio space allotment.
That old truck rocks! I could probably have it running within a few hours if it's all there and the crankshaft is not broken.

RE the truck, thanks! We were on vacation in the Black Hills looking for Bear Butte and came across this truck sitting in the middle of nowhere. This was one of the first pictures I took with my boyfriend's camera, which he didn't get his camera back until he bought me my own camera just last week ;) I have been using his computer since it has all the software to download and resize the photos and editing. I downloaded that photo off of a different account where I have it loaded there but unable to resize on my computer, but will do that this weekend and repost it out here when I go to my boyfriend's. Again, thanks for the info :)

You can get Lightroom as a free download editing program, unless you want to wait and get the same program that your boyfriend uses so you can share tips and learn.
I think that Yo_spiff posted a thread with many of the on line freebee editing programs listed.

Thanks for the info about the truck. I have a first cousin that lives out in that area. The photo makes me want to go there. I love wide open spaces.

Wah huh? There's a free version of Lightroom? Do tell!

Tanya, don't be too shy about doing some editing. It is a bit like cooking; you might not want to start off with beef wellington, but slapping a steak on the grill for a few minuets sure beats serving it up raw. Learn a few very basic moves in editing and it will be enough for a while. Or you can just ignore all the comments you get in that direction and work on your in camera work for a bit. Welcome to the mad house.
