Make use of the hdr technique to create an eye popping environmental sports portrait. This challenge should use the expert editing rule set for the purpose of capturing the portrait and background at different times and combing them in photoshop.

It is an interesting style. Anyone got any links to tutorials to achieve this look?

The basic idea to achieve that look is harsh cross lighting combined with what is pretty close to a grunge HDR processing. If you look into those processes, you'll be on the right track.
The lighting itself should be perpendicular or nearly perpendicular to the texture you want to accentuate (like the abs, for instance) so that it will form a strong relief shadow. This shadow will be boosted by the processing as well as dodge/burn. Look at some Gatorade ads for further examples.

You don't have to use artificial lighting, you can do it with natural light, you just need to angle yourself properly. If you have a windshield cover that has a silver side, use it as a reflector and you can get pretty close to the harsh cross light without using additional lighting. You can also build one with aluminum foil and cardboard. Don't crinkle the aluminum foil, you want the light hard (crinkling before attaching will soften things). If you do true HDR, use a tripod and instruct your subject to sit still, shoot in your highest fps. If you are doing pseudo-HDR, there's no need for either of the above approaches. If you aren't using artificial lighting as much, expect to do some heavier editing.

Matt has a few examples in his portfolio and Dave Black does dome nice work with off camera flash, though he skips the HDR

Really like the idea and your photos are excellent examples. Like them, too.

I do these locally, although without all the photoshop. Each of these were done naturally with off camera lights.

I'd love to see the challenge, heck I might even enter.

Lets see this challenge announced Sunday night :) That will give me time when not on call to do something other than a self portrait :)
