I am looking at three lenses currently, the Nikon 17-55 2.8, Sigma 18-50 2.8, and the Tamron 17-50 2.8. Anyone have suggestions on which one to go with? The nikon is the obvious choice, but at 2-3 times the price, is it really worth it? Also, I know on the third party lenses I have had a recurring problem on both my D50 and D90 where the display will show f- - when trying to take a shot. I don't know why this is, because I have only one third party lens right now, a promaster 18-200, and have never had this issue. I have had it with Tokina and Tamron. I have never used a sigma or quantaray. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Quantaray is a budget brand from the Ritz/Wolf camera chain. I've not heard really great things about them, even from Wolf employees. I think Promaster is a line only sold in camera shops, I think it is a budget line as well, but not sure.

I have two Tamron lenses a 10-24 and a 70-300. Thrilled with both of them and not a problem to date. I've had to send a Canon lens for repair and have a Sigma that I also need to get fixed.

I have had a Tamron 28-75 2.8 for nearly a decade, and it has been the workhorse walk around lens during that time. Never a hiccup in a time when I have become familiar with Canon and Sigma service. The only caveat I would have is the warning that part of what you are buying with Nikkor and Canon's higher price is better QC out of the factory. I know more than a few people who have gotten bad copies of third party lenses that are well reviewed. When you first get a lens test it out and be hyper critical, a friend had to return a few copies of his 28-75 (that I convinced him to buy) before he got a good copy on the third attempt. So buy from someone who has a strong return policy even if it will cost you a few bucks more.

There is a huge quality difference between the Quantaray, Promaster offerings and the Sigma, Tokina, Tamron. Not all third parties are created equal.

How about the 17-50 2.8 sigma? I really want the nikon, but I can't justify paying 2x more for it when I just do this for fun. I have researched extensively on all of these lenses, and it always seems like one or the other has this issue or that issue.

I shoot almost exclusively with my Tammy 17-50 2.8... It is fantastic! just don't get the VC model, it has far worse optics..

I'm sure the Sigma or the Tamron would be fine. Just check the copy you get...I've read a lot about quality control issues for both companies lately.

But I have another suggestion...not sure if you're set on F2.8. But I notice you have a third party 18-200. Personally, I think the Nikon 18-200 is the greatest lens on earth (not the sharpest on earth of course, but the best all purpose lens). Not only a workhorse, but light and easy to carry. I shoot with it wide open most the time and it's very sharp. In the 18-50mm range, you may lose a stop over 2.8. But then you have a great lens all the way to 200.

I have also used it for many very sharp portraits.

Of course, your mileage may vary...I may just have a great copy!

You already have that zoom range covered nicely with the 18-105 VR, which can give you good hand held shots in fairly low light with he VR unless the subjects are moving.

If it's shutter speed and bokeh you are after, you might think about getting a couple of prime lenses in the range you are wanting to shoot. Since you have the 50mm you could get a 35 and/or a wide prime, possibly for about the same price or less than the one fast zoom.

You may want to try cleaning the contacts on the lenses that give you the "f--" error message. A pencil eraser works good for that.

the 35 1.8 is a fantastic lens...
