Simulacrum are random objects that resemble human features. Famous examples are; the Great Stone Face in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the "face" on Mars, the demon face seen in the smoke of the twin towers on 9/11/01, the shroud of Turin, the Madonnas and Christs that are seen in stains from time to time.

I think an interesting and not too difficult challenge could be to: find an object or pattern that resembles a human (or animal) face. It could be expanded to included any other object, as in a rock that looks like a giraffe. This could really get people to look closely and use their cameras imaginatively.

There are two types of simulacra. The first is the chiaroscura simulacrum, where abstract patterns of light and shadow combine to produce a recognisable figure or a face. The second type is where naturally occurring objects, such as rocks, have weathered and taken on a recognisable shape, such as the outline of an animal or a face.

The chiaroscura effect, by far the most common example of this phenomenon, results from a complex mental process which enables us to "see" figures, or faces, in abstract or random patterns. As a result simulacra are quite common and can be "seen" in a diverse range of locations, such as patterned tiles or wallpaper, in clouds, on hillsides, or in rock formations. Another very common location is amongst trees and rocks. Some examples of sylvan simulacrum have been elfin faces, a sleeping puppy, and the Madonna. One can even see the simulacra of a running man in the opening screen of the latest Windows ‘95.

Great idea, as long as I don't have to spell it before I submit to it

Thats good. I have to admit I'm having trouble with the tree skull. Where is it? I see a man hanging upside down, but that's not it right?

Well .... it looks like a face so .. I would have submit that.
Large smile, biug eye vrow,2 eyes, one nose .
I think the idea ois good but that's going to be a very tough one with a few submissions and one people would have find something well .. they would take a picture of that something like I did.
I was proud that I saw it that day walking to the office there but I would not expecting it to do good in a challenge

I see one of those long-horned African antelope heads hanging between the other trees. I tried to subtly highlight it -- I guess it was too subtle...maybe I'll look for the Photoshop file and make an exaggerated version...
