I am an extremely amateur photographer that has just got my first DSLR. Took my lady out to A-Bay and would like any comments or suggestions on how to make things better with this image.

I cant decide if I like the horizon where it is or not. They say you shouldnt have the horizon go 'through' someone's head, but being at eye level it leads the eye nicely. The white sky never helps but that's more about the timing of the shot than something you can really control. I dont know much about people portraits and I'm sure some experts can suggest some things on that aspect. Other than that it could do with some color boost as the colors and lighting are quite flat and dull.

Alexandria Bay!
Is that Alexandria Bay NY?
I love that little town (Party Time!) LOL.
My wife grew up in Clayton, NY and I grew up in Watertown, NY.
We use to go to the Bay all the time.

I love to go up and eat seafood at the restaurants down on the docks when we go back home.

Yeah, its Alexandria Bay, NY. I'm a soldier at Fort Drum so I know all about A-Bay & Watertown. She's from the Bronx so it was something new for her to see. I just wish the day had been a little brighter.

Exposure is good. The colours are a bit too flat, so I'd either boost them, or desaturate altogether and work from there.

I think the idea of the space on the right is sound, but the background is relatively boring. I would crop a bit tighter around her head to make the subject a bit bigger in the frame, while still keeping a lot of water/horizon on the right.

Yes I use to go deer hunting in the winter on Fort Drum but they have built it up so much I hear you can't do that anymore. We use to have to check in at the provost marshals office at 4:00 am and select the area we wanted to hunt.

When I was young I use to work the JRECK Sub Shop right outside the main gate LOL.

Man you talk about a busy lunch hour!

Back to your shot I really like it and I think Moodville had some great comments. I think a little tighter shot of your lady would have been made the shot better. Maybe with a boat or the town in the background maybe?
