My last vacation I went to the tropics of Japan. It rained the whole time BUT I took plenty of photos and video. I spent DAYS (Perhaps weeks) editing photos of our trip. I don't know why...maybe practice, I don't know. None of them stood out as 'DPC entry material' but I edited them anyways. When I got to day 4 of our trip I was tired of the editing I was doing and went all HDR on the photos.

What do you do with vacation photos? Do you pick a couple of your best and do some extra editing and leave the rest 'as is' to share with family and friends? Or something different?

absolutely, and then i make a photobook out of them.

i don't edit all of them, i usually flag the ones i really like for the photobook or the ones i plan to print and share and only edit those. i usually delete the others.

I take thousands, delete hundreds then pick a few of my favourites to edit. I often go back to them, months even years later & find new faves that I 'tweak' on photoshop. A few years ago I went on a summer holiday with my parents- they in their RV & I rented a cottage- I chose a good assortment of photos & made some adjustments. I then had them made into a book. It was a Christmas present that they were thrilled to receive. The book looked great- it was from Costco, easy to do online, assortment of page layouts to chose from, you can personalize each photo & what set it apart from others I had looked at was that the hard cover (front & back) can be made with the image of your choice.

I also enjoy making photo collages out of some my vacation pics, turn some into cards...

I just got back from a family vacation to North Carolina's Outer Banks. Between the scenery and my exceptionally photogenic grandsons, I have 700+ pictures. Admittedly, I'm a great photographer, but even I would never expect anyone besides me to look at all of them.

After I got rid of some of the jet lag, I sat down with my photo sorting program and marked the shots I liked best (around 100) and then started processing them with Adobe Camera Raw (I've never mastered Lightroom) with tweeking, as necessary in Photoshop. I then put the ones I liked best (around 60) up at Smugmug for friends and relatives to admire and order copies of if they want. (I'm not charging anyone anything for these -- just family photos.)

I did have some people ask for the pictures of a couple of things we'd done. I didn't think the pictures were that great, but processed them and put the up anyhow "due to popular demand".

I will probably make some calendars for Christmas presents, and I'm toying with the idea of doing a book that can also be a Christmas present.

If anyone ever wants to see all of the pictures of our trip to the Outer Banks, I'll put them on a flash drive and mail them to him/her. I'll also go back through them at a later date and see if I missed any gems.

I think I typically edit 5-10% of the pictures I take while traveling; when I got a tour of the Monterey Peninsula by Bear_Music a few years ago I culled about 30 pictures from a bit over 300 shots. The number of (reasonably successful) aquarium shots probably increased the fraction I ended up editing. When I do edit the pictures I almost always set them up as prints.

When I'm not driving (taking train or plane) I probably take even more from the unusual perspectives or locations available ...

I edit them, and sometimes make a photobook. I also make a bunch at screensaver size and take them to work to use as wallpaper/screensavers. Reminds me why I put up with work.

And that reminds me, I still have work to do on my last vacation, and a book to make to share with the friend who hosted me!

When I'm traveling or vacationing, it's fun to "ride shotgun" and shoot on the run, so I usually end up with about 200-500 per day, depending on what's going on.
Sometimes I will view the pix on screen when there is down time, to enjoy seeing the day again, and reject the real clunkers to make it easier for me later.
Back home, they are viewed as a slideshow, and rated, then again, to go through the top shots and get down to about 100 to edit first.
At a later date, I go through more of them and edit some of the "found gems".

I usually dump my shots for each day on vacation at the end of the day and sit down with the laptop and batch edit all of them with DPP. That works to get all my family snapshots viewable and printable for the family. We tend to look at them online either when I am done processing or the next day, then of course at work for the next several weeks. Some of the more notable shots will get better treatment in Photoshop and sent off to print, usually 8x10's of my daughter. Also if I take any good landscapes or other creative photos I will process them at home following the trip and either put them in the vacation gallery on my family smugmug or fill in my separate photography gallery that no one but me wants to look at.

I use them as challenge entries :)

But I'm gonna make a book of it soon (as I said of some previous vacations, looks like I've some work to do)

Taking pictures is nothing if not fun.

Not so much for any traveling companions though ... :-(

I always edit a select bunch. Like Paul normally I cull out 5 to 10% for editing and then post to my smugmug account for family and friends. I also have made both slide shows and photo books but not always.

Here is a look at the past few years on smugmug:

absolutely! from here

to

and everywhere in between.

it is a challenge, finding the balance between enjoying a vacation and documenting it, but there's nothing like having great photos that capture the essence of family outings. as others have mentioned, they provide great gift material in the form of prints, canvases, calendars, books, and booklets.

as for editing, i treat vacation photos like any other assignment. i weed them down to what i want to share, batch process for the web, weed down further for my faves, then wait until i have a need (either for a present or a special request) before i do any real editing. or, until a challenge opportunity comes up ;-)

here's my latest vacation :P

I agree with most. I take tons, usually save all on my external hard drive, choose the ones I want to make a back up cd on, then from there I edit normally enough to fill an album and to get prints to put on my wall or run through a digital frame.
