I just thought you'd all like to know that I've gotten a 3rd Place in the
Orange Audubon Society 2012 Photo Contest with this picture....

Swamp Thing

I can finally say that I've won $$$ and a ribbon that I can touch and feel (sounds creepy) it's not virtual.

I'm not sure when they will be updating their Contest page but it should be soon...

This was taken at Myyaka State Park near Sarasota, Florida. I was about 20' away from this gator...it was just past dusk with a full moon, that is why it has a blue cast to it...the red light in his eye was a reflection from my flash. And yes, the water was that smooth!!!

Thank you for all your encouragement...

Fantastic image...I am ever so happy for you.

Always be careful though... I hear their bite is much worse than skeeters. :O)

Thank you so much for your kind comments...this has been quite exciting for me.

One thing that I found very interesting in this photo contest is that it has a very, very strict criteria (for good reason). Bear in mind that I live in Florida and this contest was for Native Florida Wildlife.

You can not have a photo of a bird/animal that is banded (man made), no bird/animal on cut grass/cut limbs...broken is ok but not cut by man...NO Orange Trees (never would have thought of that), boa's, pythons, iguanas, honey bees (where are they native to???)...obviously no buildings/humans...the list goes on...but I found this to be very interesting. The things I wouldn't have thought of...especially honey bees, orange trees, cut grass....

They had this beautiful picture of a Swallowtail Caterpillar on a stem of Parsley...it was Dq'd because parsley isn't native to Florida...(of course no names were mentioned, they just showed the pictures that were Dq'd and explained why).

Just some curious information that I thought you'd like to know...and many of you should consider this contest if you live/visit Florida. As you would blow them away...including me....lol

Come on anytime...we go to this State Park about once year...it's abundant with wildlife!!! The gator that I photographed was about 11/12' long and it was the small one of the bunch!!! I was about 20/25' away from him on the bank (his level) below the road (with an escape path in mind...NOT that it would do me any good if he wanted to get me, as they are quite stealth and very fast!!!)

Congrats Janine. (It's surprising how different it feels to win a tangible rather than a virtual prize).

Absolutely excellent! I love Myakka State Park...it's such a high quality Florida wilderness adventure.

Well deserved award for a great image...it's so appropriately haunting and reminds me of a Joe McNally shot from his book Hot-Shoe Diaries.
