When I go into Gatineau Park, I bring an air horn. I started doing this, when I saw a mother and cub in a favourite shooting area. The horn is incredibly loud. I once was shooting macro, accidentally setting it off in my pack.
From complete seclusion in the wilderness, totally focused on a dragonfly, to jumping like I have never jumped before! So I figure if it works for me, the bears should do the same.
Hey, At least it wasn't pepper spray.

i have heard that when walking through an area with bears you should try to make lots of noise, talk, sing loudly. from what i hear bears will generally stay away from commotion and its really bad (for you) if you stumble upon and frighten them.

Geez... is your singing really bad enough to scare a grizzly?!

A bit skeptical, I am, of the bear's behavior and the human's behavior. Reminds me a bit of the 2005 film, "Grizzly Man".

Oh, it's certainly possible. I never underestimate the lack of common sense amongst tourists.
