Hey all

Who doesn't love spring cleaning? It's pretty easy when you're chucking out items that are broken, or setting aside clothes that you'll never wear again, but can be donated to charity.

But now I'm about to tackle the studio/proproom, aka dumping ground for everything relating to photography. It's only 8x9 so doesn't take long to start getting cluttered, especially with props, and every so often I do go on a studio binge. I always find some way to justify keeping them. I try to not add to the collection, but it's pretty hard.

What do you do to keep your prop collection under control?

I stash them all over the place, like an alcoholically challenged person with her bottles.

Gosh, I guess I don't have as much crap as I thought, lol. My hubby thinks I'm nuts when I tell him I'm keeping something for photography...*lots of eye rolling goes on*

I have an open invitation to anyone who calls you nuts - just point them at me to put things into perspective.

I buy a lot of things for props - usually at the dollar store or thrift store. Last year I finally organized them. I bought these 2 shelving units at Costco, I think they were $30 each. This is in my basement.

Actually you were the first person I thought of about PM'ing in relation to this dilemma, as you clearly have a whole whack of props :-) I also liked Adam's suggestion for storage tubs but problem is, they're usually not transparent and too easy for stuff to get lost in them in turn.

However I think I've found a solution in those big clear salad bins you can by at most supermarkets. So long as you don't mind eating a lot of salad, the bins are pretty killer for storing most props in. I'll post before and after pics once I get the studio done.

Also, Karen, yep I also head for the thrift and charity stores, then hit the Dollarama if I still can't find what I need. Once found a gorgeous crystal gobelet at the local Sally Ann for 60 cents.

Thanks all! :-)

I have more of a wardrobe than a prop issue, although I have that too. Right now I have to wade through a waist-high pile of stuff to get into the studio.... There's a Goodwill three blocks from me that I cannot walk past without going into. And I can't seem to leave without buying something...

12-step program, anyone?

LOL!!! If I lived that close to a Goodwill I would be living there or at least volunteering to handle the incoming stuff, so I could get first crack at it. Then bring it back when the shoot's done. That way you'd have a steady supply of fresh props :-)

Karen - great idea with the shelving units from Costco but they're a little too open concept...not for nuthin is one of my kittehs nicknamed Destructo...and she likes to *ahem* help organize things!
