How about a challenge using manual exposure with available light (day or night) and basic editing. It might help some learn a bit more about the camera and judging light. It forces us to compose a photo based on what's available. I know this is not much of a challenge for the more advanced photographers but to many it's a chance to venture into the basics and on a more level playing field. The subject can be photographer's choice. It allows folks with limited software and equipment to participate without those handicaps.

For that, you need the Minimal Editing ruleset, which requires us to submit unprocessed, straight-from-camera JPG files. I'd think that ruleset better suited the spirit of the challenge anyway. You'd also need a special rule that the EXIF data have to show the camera was in manual mode or the image would be DQ'd I suppose.

Wouldn't that, in and of itself, restrict the competition to only the users who have equipment that is capable of manual shooting modes? (many P&S models have no such feature.)

Yup. But how else can it be regulated? And, by definition, anyone with one of those cams couldn't "meet the challenge" regardless of whether it was regulated by an EXIF rule or not...
