I was wondering.... I noticed that a lot of people mark
this box only if the comment is a positive one. I have read a
lot of VERY good comments (IMO), that weren't mark as helpful,
because they mentioned things that could have improve the shot.
Never mind that they said good things about the shot too, and
that they weren't hurtful or insulting.

A comment can be helpful even if the viewer didn't like the photo,

Isn't the whole point of this site learning???

I think critical comments are much more helpful. I wish people would give them more often.

Many don't use the checkbox in that manner it was intended. I have seen mention in threads of the checkbox being used for a variety of things, including simply letting the commenter know the comment had been read -- others just ignore the checkbox altogether.

The uses of the checkbox are almost as varied as the number of different rating systems used during voting. May as well consider each person to be using it for their own purposes.

I very randomly check of the helpful box. Personally, I find any and all comments helpful, it's just a matter if I click the box or not.

That was the case until recently, where I received QUITE the snotty comment about doing so, so now I click none of them.

It could be precieved as being inconsiderate if you don't tick any of the boxes !!.

I always check ALL of them. It is my way of comunicating a sort of "Thank you for taking your time to look at my photo and the trouble of typing a comment" if nothing else.

I agree. If the comments isn't hurtful or insulting I check it too.

I checked a comment that read simply, "Very creative"

With my entry I tried to be original and creative, my average is not fantasic (4.88 so far) and was starting to doubt the concept of originality in favour of the seeming preferred in-your-face, abstract approach.

I think that this may be a bit of an issue here, it's hard to succeed with being subtle when your one of 200+ photos, shouting out seems to be the formula to success. This reminds me a bit of children's television, in the old days things were much less intense, and drew attention to them, now it's all about shouting out and grabbing attention - is one good and the other bad? - I dunno

I almost never mark any comments as helpful simply becasue going through clicking them is a) a big pain, and b) I forget.

I think it's a pointless feature myself.

Would you prefer that people did not comment at all.

What a strange reply. I agree with Jon, I think: it's very difficult to interpret what people mean when they check the 'helpful' box, and thus a near-meaningless statistic.

Surely just checking a box as you check your comments is not too tough? Unless I got a 100 or so comments I feel that it's not much effort to reward people for their time and show that a considered comment is valued.

I've received comments that truly change the way I approach my photography and it really looks greedy and selfish when thoughtful help is given and it's not acknowledged. To know you've helped someone progress is also an incentive to keep commenting.

Edit: I agree that the terminology should be refined though - with more options perhaps, as discussed in other threads

My point being Ed is that you will be discouraging people on commenting if everyone took the attitude not to tick the box.
The other side to this is that many people struggle to give meaningful comments and when they are acknowleged as being helpful those peolple gain confidence and will be more inclined to comment.
It isn't real hard to tick the box if you gained something out of it.

I have gone through various phases.
Firstly I checked it always, Then I went through a phase of only checking it when someone took the effort to make suggestions to help my photography. & didn't check comments like "Great".
Now I acknowledge that "Great" also helps my Ego, so check them also, and comments that people didn't like the picture for some reason or another, as this helps me assess what others think.
In my most recent challenge I have checked all comments except a couple where the commentator has said "Doesn't met the challenge" Which I of course totally disagree.

I must be strange. I tick the box if I find the comment helpful and consrtuctive. I also PM all commentators' and thank them for taking the time to comment. I also try to explain what I was trying to achieve when I took the shot. Call me strange if you like but it is the only way we can share what we are doing and learn from the experience of others.

Agree with that 100%.
The system that exists for acknowledging comments is pretty meaningless and one of the few weak points the site has. I started a thread on this subject a good few weeks ago with suggestions for improvement, purely because this subject keeps getting discussed.
The feeling I got from the thread was that the majority are happy with the system as is.

I have made & received plenty of comments and never bothered to check if someone 'find what i said helpful'. Nor would I care to be honest.

This has been discussed many times before, and the end result is that quite a few people do not tick that little box so really it becomes pointless.

If I were to tick it anyway, I would have to think about every comment and decide if I find it 'helpful' or not. Chances are I wouldn't so it makes no difference anyway.

That sounds very arrogant, but most comments are 'great picture' 'love the lighting' 'nice shot' type comments, which whilst being very flattering and nice to read, are not 'helpful' as such.

Some of the critiques are not helpful either, having someone who say does not like contrasty B&W say 'nice image, but watch out that you don't put too much contrast in the scene, your blowing out your highlights' is also not very helpful when the photographer intended that in the first place.

The same goes for comments regarding DOF.

Take a picture I took recently. a lot of commenter's said 'nice shot, like the soft look', and a lot said 'nice shot, but it's too soft'. Now I am grateful for both types of comments, so it would be unfair to mark one helpful, and the other not.

If I marked them both I would be lying which would make the system redundant as it's based on a lie.

So it's easier not to mark any.

If the button said 'was this comment nice' then yes it would urge me (and others perhaps) to tick it.

I proposed a system to mark the comment out of ten which (to me) gave more meaning to the whole acknowledgement setup.
As a guide...
Helpful comments 6-10.
Bland (nice picture) comments would rate a 5 with me.
Unhelpful but well meaning...5-3.
Nasty or sarcastic..hitting the bottom.
I thought that this would probably help people to improve their commenting and maybe encourage some constructive criticism and produce less sarcasm and nastiness.
Profile page would then show your Commenting score which would have a bit more meaning than the current statistic.
I did concede however, that it may be too cumbersome to implement?

jonpink I respect your view on this it just has intrigued me why people would not bother to tick the box and I can see from your reply that you feel it unnecessary.
Please don't feel that im being antagonistic because that is not my intention but as I questioned earlier would you prefer that people did not comment at all?
I beleive it just to be common courtesy and respect for your fellow members to take the time to think about the comments and for your own benifit to hear what people think about your image.

No I like getting comments as much as I like giving them.

It may also be worth pointing out that I try to comment as much as I receive. Currently I have made 1384 comments, and received 1396. that keeps me commenting too.

Please understand it's the word 'helpful' that keeps me from commenting -plus the fact that I was here for 6 months before i even noticed that button and going back and marking over a thousand comments would be hard going.

Also note, that when i do receive a truly unique and helpful comment I generally PM the commenter personally to thank them for such a critique.

If the comment is truely helpful I check the box. If it's just a comment on the subject or a criticism without explanation (ie. "horrible picture") I don't bother.
08/09/2004 11:26:07 AM · #22
This is my first challenge so I haven't come up with a "system" yet for comments, but I clicked all of them helpful. Even the one that said "I don't know why you submitted this picture". Now if the person who wrote that goes back to their profile page clicks on the number of helpful comments they will see their (I thought) snotty remark and maybe next time they can come up with a critical remark without being snotty. I've only gotten seven comments of my photo so far and two or three have really been helpful to me to see what areas I need to work on, but I still marked them all as helpful.

I mark almost everything helpful. Compliments, critiques, including those I diagree with. There have been a few truly useless comments that made no sense to me. They weren't helpful and I didn't mark them as such.
