 I really loved this shot, by  odriew and was surprised to find it with just over 6 in score. I really thought it would ribbon.
I would love to know why so many scored it lower than 5. It will make a good post challenge discussion.

I agree, I think it's wonderful. I'm guessing people weren't seeing double?? I was one of the 8's

| I 5d it because the people we're far too small for the criteria. Its an interesting shot, but I think most voters would call this more a landscape shot with two very tiny people instead of a double take of similar objects. |

The thing to remember about DPC is it's dominated, in the voting, by an "assignment mentality". I've heard it best expressed as "Imagine, for every challenge, a MAGAZINE with the same title as the challenge, and your assignment is to shoot a cover for that magazine." Now, I don't agree with this, not at all, I'm often looking for more oblique takes on the topic when I shoot, and ALWAYS rewarding them when I vote, but still, there it is... I think all my ribbons are "obvious" hits on the challenge, for example.
The shot you're referencing, lovely as it is, is not an especially good in-your-face example of meeting the challenge. It's too subtle in its relevance and processing both to do much better than it did. 6+ is pretty good these days, 21st place...
That's my take on it anyway.

I gave it an 8. The fact that the people were small didn't negate their value to me.

I gave it a 10, size didn't matter, it was a beautiful whimsical shot, which swept me away. |

I saw the double take as being the similar forms of cliffs and the waves. Had the forms of the two people been closer to mirroring each others postures it seems it would have appealed more to some. |

I almost notice the people more because of their distance. They stick out in all that white sand and my eye is immediately drawn to them. In fact I have a hard time looking at anything but the people in the shot. It's an amazing example of more, or bigger in this case, is not always better. This was an amazing shot and IMHO fit the challenge to a tee.

In fact the more I look at the photo the more it's like a magic trick almost. All that beauty, the rocks, the beach, the georgous waves and all I can look at are two tiny specks doing Lord knows what. I should see the grandeur of the landscape but the double take is all I care about. It's a cool shot. I didn't vote in the challenge but when I looked through it I picked this one and the blue winner ad the two I thought would most likely ribbon.
Very underappreciated indeed. |

| A beautiful image - one of those rare ones that comes along now and again and takes one's breath away. Perfectly fit the challenge. Think about it - "double take". You look, then look again and see the people - two of them. Look again and see the marvelous mirror of the water to rock. As Ben said, too many not so obvious pairs. Lovely. |

I really liked it. It didn't pop out to me in the thumbs during my first run through... as a small it didn't have a big impact. Maybe that's the issue with some voters, if it doesn't make an immediate impact and jump out, it gets voted down. Upon my second run-through I spotted it and gave it a 7.

Before voting, I look through all the entries and figure out which entries are getting the highest and lowest votes. I use the entire scale, so I always give out at least a 1 and a 9. I reserve the 10 vote for the truly exceptional photos. From there, I line up photos accordingly in relation to the other entries in the challenge.
I give bumps for shots which I find creative. I normally take points away if it's an oft repeated idea. I'm also a stickler for the challenge description. If I can't see the connection, I normally hold off my vote on that particular photo, ponder it over, if I still see no connection, become a dream crusher.
In this case, I thought this entry was average in relation to the other photos. I saw a loose connection to the challenge description, and thus took a point away.

EDIT - I should add, if this were in a free study, it may have got a lot higher vote depending on the other entries.

Dear Neat,
I would like to say first of all thank you for voting on my photo's. You have been so kind with your comments and generally made me feel welcome on this site.
I have read what you are challenging on this forum and now I feel that you are trying to goad people into feeling the way that you do about a picture. Comments like "fess up" makes me feel that if I don't vote the way that you do, I must have something to "fess up" about. The voting is between 1 and 10 and I feel that people have a right to vote however they want to when they look at a photo.I don't want to be made to feel like I have to vote with the rest of the group. I can't remember what score I gave this photo, and frankly I'm not even going to check, just so I can take part in someones witch hunt. Believe me, I have had my fair share of 1's , 2's and 3's and they sometimes make me question " what am I doing here on this site because Damn, my photo's must be god awful to get such low scores. I almost made my first 6 in this challenge and I was very disappointed with my 5.96. But, I didn't complain. I just know that I have do better.I truly hope that I am misunderstanding your forum post. Keep in mind that I am not trying to disrespect you in any way. I hope that I can converse with you in the future without any flak.

In past discussions, that has been described as "bucket voting". You have 10 "buckets" for votes that get evenly filled.

I don't evenly fill them. More of a Gaussian distribution centered around 4.2550 according to my profile.

My guess would be someone who uses the entire scale of the voting spectrum.
