So, I entered a few photos in the fair, and unfortunately none of them placed. Though, maybe mine shouldn't have placed, I'm sure others that didn't should've. I think I must be going crazy!
This is the question: Are light glares (if they are right over the subject-that is in shadow) good things??? I thought all along that they were bad things. Well, good or bad, I thought it looked pretty bad, and it placed.
Just a question. Maybe there will be different judges next year. Either way, I'm not going to that company to get portraits done!

I would have to say that glare in any portrait is definitely NOT a good thing.

Was it truly a glare or was it a form of high key lighting?

Do you mean lens flare? Where spots appear diagonally across the image?

I feel your pain fredluvsHim. I entered two pieces in a juried show in June and the winning shot for the show was a completely out of focus (not just artfully blurred) light house. The shot I believe should have won (NOT mine, btw) was a gorgeous shot of a muslim woman's eyes...it got second place.

Fairs are so difficult because the superintendent of the photography division is the person most interested in spending the time and effort, not necessarily the most qualified person. My suggestion is to try to find out a little more about the judge from the fair board...how long they have been doing it, what their qualifications are, etc. My bet is that you'll find out they aren't all that qualified at which point you might make some suggestions of people you know in the community who are qualified. I just picked my stuff up from the fair last night and the "Best of Show" definately wasn't. But considering the background of the judge...
...anyway, don't let it sour you. Keep trying!
