Recently I saw the movie "The Big Year" with Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson and I had a thought about doing something on that but scaling it down a bit. My budget doesn't allow me to travel around the world, let along North America but I thought this would work well if we just did something around our own town or if you happen to be traveling then bonus points...

WHAT IS A BIG YEAR?

This side challenge will run from April 1st until April 30th 2012 in which you must take as many shots of different bird species as you can. No bird in (your) gallery should be the same and take a few mins to look up the name, you can use this website to do so www.whatbird.com/ or this one Bird ID Help. I would also like to know where the bird was when you photographed it.

To create your gallery, it's easy to do it here on DPC but if your not a paying member it's pretty easy to create a folder in your flickr account, Facebook account or somewhere else that allows you to host some images for free

The member with the highest number of birds species wins... Make sure that somewhere in your gallery you add and update the number of birds in that gallery (if you can). That will just make it much easier for all of us to see who is winning this little challenge.

I will also try and keep the tally on the bottom of this thread along with the thumbnails of everyone that posts.

I'll post one more before I head out for the day.

Btw - most of the birds in the McNeil Avian Center at the Philadelphia Zoo are endangered species.

This one doesn't count. Just some playing with my sparrow photo. It just fits so very well with the song.

Just showing 7 of the 25 species I photographed today. Some were very far away and it was a very dark gray day. So hopefully not too many points taken off for less than beautiful images :)

Snow, rain and cold in the mountains today. Not a bad day to photograph some of the family Corvidae. (Corvidae is a cosmopolitan family of oscine passerine birds that contains the crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs and nutcrackers.)

....American Crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos
