I am visiting Australia in September 2012 and would love some input regarding what places one should visit when in Tasmania...and also what one should avoid.

Thanks for your help.

Avoid the Tasmanian devil! ;D

Other than that, I'm no help.

There are many places to see in Tasmania and the local tourist information will have more material than you can handle. Obviously what you can see depends on your likes and method of travel.
My personal tops are Cradle Mountain & Port Arthur.

I have been there few times. Not many people live there :) It also usually gets missed out from maps of Australia so they sell their own version with Tasmania on top and small Australia below ;)

I think it will be still cold in September and with the weather we've been having you may need raincoats and umbrellas for the West coast. It might also be snow in the mountains in the centre. Sometimes it snows there at Christmas!

Tasmania was a convict colony in its early days so these are the main historical attractions. Hobart and Launceston are nice towns and there are lots of National Parks for walking. I hope you have at least 2 weeks to see it all!

Depends a lot what your into.... It's been a LONG while so check on my memory with google here :-)

* Gordon below Franklin is well worth a river trip.
* Jerusalem national park is amazing but it's NOT an easy drive up and wander - more serious hiking bring everything in & out sort of deal.
* Bicheno is a nice little fishing village type of deal.
* Wine glass bay is nice.
* Stanley is kinda hokey but cool - catch a lift to that help (the nut???).
* Cradle mountain and dove lake is well worth a visit but don't expect to see the lake :-) If you so take some damn pictures (yeah, your prob going to do that anyway right).
* Port Arthur is a must - although might want to read up a little on the history of Oz settlement if you have not in the past - the trip to the island is worth it IMO.
* Russell falls is a nice waterfall in a nice area - pretty easy walk from memory. That whole park is nice but I forget the name off the top of my head - it's been a while.
* The drive down to Queenstown is amazing is you like driving and no passengers get motion sick :-) Interesting to see what the copper industry has done in that area in the past.
* Cascade brewery is real cool if your into beer making.
* If you go down to the Hobart docks in the late afternoon some of the boats will sell you seafood that is fresh shall we say - cooked in stands off the end of the boat.

I've travelled there many times as one of my sisters used to live there.

The weather there is quite similar to Seattle weather so you have a rough idea. The coldest month there would be August I believe.

Port Arthur if you like history and old ruins.

Ross, a beautiful historic town with lovely buildings. 70+ k south of Launceston. Looks very much like an old English town.

Gordon River cruise from Strahan.

You may be able to see penquins from Bruny Island. A ferry ride from Kettering, which is about 20 mins from Hobart.

Cradle Mtn is a must, stay there in case the weather is iffy.

Hobart is a more interesting city than Launceston in my opinion.

See the denuded coloured hills of Queenstown, thanks to the copper mines that were responsible for that.

It doesn't take long to drive from top to bottom of Tasmania! I think it was a 2 hour drive from Hobart to Launceston. It's been over 20 years since I was there.

Avoid asking Tasmanians to see their scar on their shoulders. :-) There is a joke about them having two heads, so one had to be removed. //www.ozshots.com/map/

Wooooo hooooo I am getting SO excited!!!
plamprec and I get to share this trip with Ray (sorry Robert :-)
I have never been to Tasmania, but always wanted to see it.

I might have to gag hubby..... he is one of those who think it is über hilarious to keep talking about the two heads *sigh*.

Thank you all for your input already. I'll be the one doing the research, coming up with the itinerary and doing the navigating. Just as well..... heaven knows where we'd end up. Despite the fact that it must be VERY hard to get lost on Tassie, I bet Paul and Ray would manage.

Any wisdom on hiring a camper van/bus of some sort vs sedan plus hotel rooms?

I have little doubt that either my wife or me - likely me - would wake up dead if we shared a combi :-) There are some great places to stay in Tasi - adds to the cost obviously. Cabins in Cradle mountain are great, historic cottages in various places. We mixed some great properties with a budget chain and sprinkled the good ones around.

...we don't get lost, it's just that we really like wandering about and experience those "Off of the beaten path" areas.

Ya... that's our story and we're sticking to it.

Thanks for all the input so far folks. :O)
