I am borrowing my dad's Canon T2i and I don't have any triggers/receivers (yet anyways). I was wondering if there is a way to have someone hold the 580EX and trigger it with the T2i's built-in flash? If so, how do I twiddle with the 580EX to do so? I don't need ETTL or any of that, I'll set the flash manually. Thanks in advance!

I don't think the 580EX has any optical slave support. My 580EX II does not, and I assume the original 580EX wouldn't either. It seams crazy that they would leave something so simple out if such nice flashes. Canon wants to push it's proprietary master slave triggering thing, which unfortunately the T2i does not support.

Most Canon flashes were not exactly designed for the user's interests, and the 580 EX (I or II) is no different. You must add an optical trigger. Be aware, Canon flashes do NOT work with many optical triggers that are readily available.
Here is a good lowdown.

Syl is great for general flash info, but ESPECIALLY Canon related. Check out his site and his books.

ETA: He notes you can get those slaves from Flashzebra, and I wholeheartedly endorse doing business with them. Their site seems sorta dodgy but service is pretty amazing and super reliable.

The 7D can be used as a master and trigger the 580, but I don't think the T2i can. If it does, it's in the camera menu, under "flash control"--> "built in flash" --> "wireless function"

The setting is there on the T2i, but it only works if you have something on the hotshoe that can do the mastering for the camera. Which means he would need an extra 580EX II or Canon Speedlite transmitter.

I'm not sure about the T2i, but on the 7D, this is certainly not the case. The pop-up flash can fire both the 430 and the 580EXII, although I'm not sure about the 580EX, without any other equipment. I know this because I once did it on a regular basis, prior to investing in some radio triggers.

I believe that the 7D is the only Canon camera with a pop up flash that can act as an E-TTL Master

I knew that the 7D was the only ETTL master, but I was more curious if you could just have it set manually and react to a dumb flash.

I second flash zebra... i've purchased a few things from them and they are super helpful and knowledgeable. Shipping is extremely reasonable and FAST.

With parts from them, you can enable any canon flash to act as an optical slave.

No, not without an external slave trigger.

The popup cannot do manual as far as I know.
Typed too slow :-)
