Hello guys/gals.

I'm doing a product shoot in a soft box in a few weeks and I need to get a macro lens (canon mount)asap. I need some suggestions please. I'm on a bit of a budget, and in a bit of a panic :[

How much of a budget? A Canon 100mm F2.8 macro can be found for under $500 used. If the budget is more extreme than that, I'd suggest some extension tubes to use with your 17-50. Kenko tubes are good quality with a full set of electrical contacts. A set of 3 can be had for $179(US), perhaps a little less if you shop around.

I was thiking maybe 100mm F2.8. That would be the max I'd like to spend....how is that Canon 50mm f2.5?

The main difference between different focal lengths will be the working length. Longer focal length macro lenses will let you place the camera farther away for a given magnification.

As previously posted, the 50/2.5 macro will need to be closer to the subject for the same magnification. The difference is not as dramatic as you might imagine, however. One significant difference between the 50/2.5 macro and Canon's other macro lenses is that the 50/2.5 only goes to 0.5x magnification, not 1.0x as with most macro lenses. Essentially, on your 40D an object a little under 2 inches long will fill the frame. At 1.0x, you could fill the frame with an object an inch long.
So, if you need the additional magnification, a 100mm/2.8 macro USM (the non-IS version) would be great choice. The 50/2.5 should work well for you if you are OK with the lower magnification.

Ok so I ordered the 50mm 2.5 (as magnification is not the biggest factor).

Thanks for your help!
