The results of the 'Single Light Source IV' challenge has been recalculated, due to the disqualification of the former 5th place image for removing major elements. Congrats to our new honorable mention!
01/30/2012 04:23:53 PM · #2
Crap, let me find the picture and show you, I did not remove any element, it is all still there in the shot. I didn't remove it, I darkened arm, desaturated red, pulled down on curves and levels, lightened face and then darkened arm, desaturated. All legal steps in Advanced.

BUT congrats to the new 5th place!

Edited to add, these are not shoot photos, this was late at night, with JPEG and on board flash and a test shot, I promise I am not that crappy at taking 'real' shots.

The other arm, fingers and cup. but they are still there in the photograph. But you can not see them. Because of the selective colours, desats , contrast etc etc

Regardless of the DQ PP is outstanding! (I am not into portraits but this was a very interesting example)

It sucks to be DQ'd and I think it is wrong as all the steps are legal in Advanced.

But you all rock for saying it rocks lol! Thanks guys!

totally agree.

Who'd have thought this glamorous classy woman was holding a plastic cup!

Ow. Sorry about the DQ Juliet. I do have to say that I agree with the decision (not that that has any bearing on anything, LOL). It doesn't matter *how* you remove something, if it was there in the original and gone in the final, it was removed. Advanced Rules are "results-based" not "methods-based." Any tool, including a simple curves adjustment, may be legal or not, depending on the result.

Edit for typo

Well it DOES rock...

But... (You knew there was a "but" right?) There's seems to be a misconception as to the meaning of the word "remove" in the context of editing images. "Remove" doesn't ONLY mean "cut out and replace with something else", it means "edit to the point where it disappears from sight". Images have been DQ'd for less extreme removals than that.

Remember, it's not meaningful to say "all the steps are legal in advanced" because it's not what steps you take that matters, it's where you end up when you're finished. And you caused a couple major compositional elements to disappear; that's the bottom line. It's not allowed, no matter how you do it.

R.

I agree with the decision also.. advanced rules state as follows..

You may not:- "use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer’s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken."

yes curves, desat etc are legal tools but become illegal the way the entrant used them.. IMHO this is a case of reading the rules and attempting to bend them.. just my opinion.

Why? He just restated what a few other notable members have said - your image does not meet the requirements of Advanced Editing. It would be fine in Expert Editing.
