Does anybody have the real scoop on these devices? Do they work as advertised? Where can I get the best deal on either of these?

Got a digital wallet (now MindStor) recently at work. Was working fine until recently -- tech support has been a little TOO thorough trying to find out the problem (when will they listen to the people who are dealing with the problem and really do know what they're talking about?) but they've been truly supportive.

rls_2002,

Did you get one? I would like to get one, but $300-$500 is a lot to just take a chance.

Anyone else have any experience?

RedRuthann,

Nope... I am going on to vacation to British Columbia at the end of the month and I'm going to borrow a friend's 128k memory stick to augment the 3 128k memory sticks I own. I haven't had enough feedback on these products to chance sinking money into one. I may take a laptop with me too.

I'm in the market for something too. I'm going to the UK for a month this autumn, including some fairly remote locations (train to bus to postbus to boat). I have no desire to drag a laptop through all of this, especially since I would have to borrow or rent one. There is no way I'm going to have enough memory, and I'm wavering about what to do about it. I would love to find a place that rents these things or a group of people who could go in on one with me, but I haven't had any luck so far. :-(

Did they fix your MindStor, Patella?

What are these devices?

They're PDA-sized devices with a slot that takes your memory card. They can download and store the photos, so you can erase the card and reuse it. They run on batteries, so they are highly portable and you don't need to drag a laptop with you when you travel. Minds@Work, JOBO, and Nixvue are a few of the brands.

Thanks... They are pretty expensive, aren't they.

Thank you for bringing this up... I would like to know if they protect your files thru airports....
Any thoughts on the best way to travel via air with digital?

Hi Karen,
I use CompactFlash type cards. I go through the airports on a routine basis. I've never lost any digital data of any kind.

100 and 200 speed film don't seem to have much trouble with the Xray scanners. I have had problems with some of the faster ISO speed films like 400 and 800.

If I owned one, I might. Since I don't own anything that isn't digital...

Have a Mindstor. Love it. Not sure where my boyfriend bought it though. We use it for various other things besides photo file transporting. It was worth the price in my opinion.

I was just looking into the MindStor myself. I found a couple of them on Ebay, where I do a lot of shopping. Might save you some money if you are willing to shop on Ebay. There is a buy-it-now price of $300 listed on one of them. (I'm always looking for a good buy).
Good luck!

They haven't yet fixed ours, but that's only because I haven't yet sent it in. After running through the "could it be this" hoops, they did finally send an RMA -- I've just been a slacker (actually, been really busy) and haven't sent it in.

Honestly, I have nothing bad to say about their tech support -- though it may sound otherwise -- they were merely being thorough as they tried to solve my problem without them actually having to have the unit sent back.

I hear that a good place to buy them is from ECost

After sweating over spending money (I'm VERY frugal), I just "bit the bullet."

Item: MindStor All-in-One kit (adaptors & charger included) 10Gig drive

Cost: $285. With shipping & handling, $329

To add yet another option, Archos is releasing one that also has the ability to play MP3s.
