Neat Image - DPChallenge Forums

ok.. i'm well versed in photoshop but i always hear people talking about "running their photo through neat image". I've tried some google searches and can't find this all powerful software. Anyone want to point me in the right direction?

I'm honestly starting to think that magazine's such as Maxim and Stuff are running all their photos through Neat Image's "remove all noise" filter. I tried it one pic of mine and nearly all the girl's pores were gone :O Nonetheless, I'm grateful it's been able to clean up my night shots so well. It's a shame I just recently found out about it.

I don't actually have the software and I don't even plan to get it unless I need to clean up a big mess.

i'm highly impressed. will probably be buying it in the future.. i just cleaned a distractingly noisy photo and it now looks great!

Well, it helps some photographs, but it can ruin others. I always try it on every photo I edit and keep some, but not all. Sometimes the effect is too much and I really haven't mastered controlling it.

Just a couple days ago, I bought Neat Image. Works like a charm in Linux with Wine, by the way. (The demo doesn't though, it's got bugs.)

Properly calibrated and used, it won't necessarily remove all pores from skin, because it uses advanced algorithms to "learn" about the noise your particular camera produces and it eliminates just that noise specifically. Sure, you can also use Neat Image without a camera profile, just using the image itself to build a noise profile, but it won't be as accurate at removing the noise.

See, d14 and I disagree here, and this is something you'll find, is that some people like noise. Personally, I hate it. Except in some very rare cases, like sometimes in B&W. But I _love_ creamy smooth colors and textures. Like the Canon 10D and 300D produce. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Nikon guy and I *love* my D70, but the 10D/300D puts out stunningly clean, smooth images that I can't believe. Neat Image helps me get that with my camera.

Just don't overdo the NeatImaging, or you'll get a plasticy texture. If you keep the Luminance noise removal power to about 60%, it will look more natural, a lot more than that and it starts to get "interesting" and you start to lose small details. (Sometimes you'll want this, it's just easy to get carried away... :-)

Are you using the specific noise profiles for you camera? You can download one for your model at //www.neatimage.com/profiles.html

Or, for even more accurate and better noise reduction, make your own with their calibration chart. This takes a bit of time, but it will give you superb images if done right. I found it was difficult to get good contrast on my printed calibration chart, I had to light it strongly on the right side to try to use all my dynamic range, this way Neat Image can learn about the differing noise levels that very dark and very light areas have on your camera. Give yourself half a day or so to read the Neat Image manual (you can download the PDF from the web site) and make your own profiles. If this is too much, you should be fine with the downloadable profile for your camera model, if they have one.

My own mother told me some of my grainier images make her sick. Thanks mom. This one really bothered her.

Layers of grain on infrared. Wonder what neat image would do to this? Give up?

I like that one actually. I think it looks cool with the grain, it adds character, but that's just me.

Surprisingly well done, really. Having no noise profile to work from, Neat Image is left somewhat in the dark, and it did pretty well, considering.

Love noise and hate creamy smooth colors -- hate noise and love creamy smooth colors.

I don't like either extreme -- they both loose image detail. There is a much more detailed and dynamic image in the middle-ground somewhere. :D
