Awww, sunset is so "been there, done that". Plus, I don't think most people would say "let's go out at night and see the sunset". After dark shots are much more fun and open to creativity! Plus the description literally says "after the sun goes down". So, were I to vote on your pic above you'd get a big fat 1 (nice picture though). If the sun were actually down, but the sky still had color and light, I wouldn't give you a 1, but... ;)

Just my 0.02.

No fair, Giles...you have an advantage! :P I say, sun below the horizon....makes for more dramatic lighting and a bit more challenging for many!

Why couldn't this challenge be during one of my camping trips. A bit cold to camp right now. Heck, maybe I'll still do it.

I am waiting for the first comment to the tune of ..."its a bit dark!" Ha! its a night landscape- its supoosed to be, no, its got to be low key! Its not a how high can you bump your ISO up to--- or is it?

Who said that? The challenge is not 'dark night landscape' ;)

A night landscape could be quite bright (think of the full moon for instance).

Besides which, "brightness" just depends upon shutter duration.

That was taken after any sun was visible, but the exposure is such that it looks like daylight.

Also, congrats petehall on your first submission. Don't take things too seriously/harshly and get discouraged if your score isn't what you were expecting. And feel free to ask for additional comments in the forum after voting has concluded if you want further critique. Just be warned, asking for critique typically invites more critical responses (which are awesome... just be ready for them).

Thanks :-)

I actually am quite keen to learn what I've done wrong so I can hopefully do better next time.

In April I will have owned a DSLR for just 1 year, so am still relatively new to photography.

Thought these competitions would motivate me to do better and also try different shots.

Cant wait to see what everyone has taken!

The challenges provide great motivation and subject, but you need to keep trudging. The whole thing with improving is you need to get used to hearing how you've failed :)
You have a great outlook though, so it sounds like you're off to a great start.
I (and many others) also find that heavily and carefully commenting will dramatically increase your own aptitude, since it makes you focus on what you like and dislike about photos, so that you can hone and apply that same vision to your own work.

ETA: If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'm there for PM's and whatnot as well, don't hesitate to send a message.

I'm excited about this one. At first I wasn't sure if I had anything worth shooting nearby... but all you have to do is look for it!

Wish I lived out west though... the landscapes out there are just spectacular! Maybe it's a "grass is greener" sorta thing.

Very much so. Sure, it's great for skies and landscapes, but cityscapes are great subjects... and we don't have much. Denver is pretty socked in with smog from most vantage points, for instance. Just different approaches to the same end. Do what you can, and do it to the best of your ability.

I lived "out west" (California) all my adult life until I retired, at which point I moved to the other coast, to Cape Cod, because of the light :-)

What rules would be broken? They didn't enter - are you not allowed to post an image you would have entered until after the challenge is done?

Yes -- you are correct. You are not supposed to post an image that you took for the challenge until the challenge is over. It is against the rules.

When you say good start, how can you tell what your votes are?

I see a lot of sunset photos... surely sunset is not night time?

Some really great shots though :)

because on the left of the home screen it shos me my 4 pictures currently in voting and there current scores, votes, views, comments etc. you might have turned yours off in your preferences, go my home > my preferences and uncheck hide voting.

if you want that is.

very disappointed with the number of sun sets in this challenge, some lovely photos but not as great as i thought it would have been.

Found it thanks.

Are you able / allowed to write back to comments during voting?
01/18/2012 04:19:34 AM · #24
it is very much advised to wait till after voting to contact someone to thank them for a comment,

do not write back trying to change someone opinion even if you believe they are completely wrong goes against the spirit of encouraging comments etc
01/18/2012 04:28:46 AM · #25
I actually agree with the critical comments and so far they have been very kind :-)
