I'm taking a trip to Europe with my brothers in about a week and a half, and we'll be staying with some friends near Venice for a few days for part of it. They offered to lend us their car while we're there, and since Slovenia and Croatia are so close, I was wondering what sort of "road trips" we could do. I'm thinking more of a day trip, but I don't think we'd mind something overnight if it were really worth it. Keep in mind we'll be there in January, so I don't know how weather would play into it. We are more travelers than vacationers, so anything adventurous will sound good to us.

(Also, we're thinking of taking a train through the alps from Germany (possibly Munich) to Venice. Does anyone have any favorite routes? I don't think we'll make it to Zermatt or the more popular places like that, but any "hidden gems" would be great to know about. I was thinking Innsbruck, which isn't Swiss Alps, but I hear is beautiful.)

Any suggestions? Thanks everyone!

What about one of the most beautiful places in the world? And it's very close to where you're going :)

Where is that? The Dolomites?

We are going to be staying in Heidelberg for a couple days, and that's pretty close! Thanks for the tip!

I live a quick train ride from Heidelberg. If you want any tips or drinking shooting buddy, let me know.

Search for Baita Segantini, near Trento and pretty close to Venice. Maybe the most famous place for landscape photography in Italy :)

Where abouts are you? Seems like you'd know some good places to shoot. This is my third time to Heidelberg, but I haven't really been to the surrounding areas much so I might take you up on your offer!

Bled, Slovenia is gorgeous, especially if you like landscapes (there is a lake with an island on which is a pretty church). Piran, Slovenia, on the coast neat Croatia, is also very photogenic. Postojna, Slovenia, is famous for its enormous cave system full of stalactites/stalagmites. I've never been to Croatia, but from what I've heard, that country is just as infinitely photogenic as Slovenia.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention Lugano, Switzerland as an amazingly lovely place to visit. The city sits in a valley along a lake in the southern-most part of the country. A mountain juts out of the lake very dramatically. You can take a cable car to the top for spectacular views of the city, the Alps, and a bit of Italy. Definitely recommended : )

Yes, that's definitely a must-see. Other towns have Carnivale celebrations, but Venice's is unique.

Wow! Thank you so much for the info! You're quite the seasoned traveler and so I know these tips are good! I was told by another person recently that I should try to make it to Lugano if I can, so I'm definitely going to look into that more! Thank you again!

Unfortunately we'll only be there 'til the 8th of January. Would have LOVED to see Carnival though! Guess I'll just have to go back next year! ;-)

I visit the south of Croatia quite often. Dubrovnik is the main town, and its historic walled 'old town' is beautiful. From there you have the Dalmatia coast and can go island-hopping and enjoy the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.

I should get a job with the tourist board.

hi, if you have specific questions about Croatia you can ask me everything ... also there is so much to see in my country (as in any for that matter) that is
difficult to write it all down :-)

try //gb.croatia.hr for start :-) , i live in central Croatia 20km from Slovenian border so if you lurk around pinch me so we can meet !
