Hello,

I have a Rebel T2i Canon.
Sigma 300mm F4
Canon 200mm F2.8 L
Canon 85mm F1.8
Zeiss 35mm F1.4
Tokina 11-17mm F2.8

I am looking at either getting the 7D, waiting for the successor of the 7D, or getting the K5 Pentax.

Pentax.... in camera IS is one of the main things. Small size, weather sealed. I have a decent collection of old K-mount lenses from my K1000 that I could use with it too.

I shoot in rough environments... hiking, skiing, dirt biking, etc... I would really benefit from a very tough, although not too expensive setup.

I have had a lot of weather related problems. Water in lenses and cameras, dust, etc. Every time I go out in the winter my junky T2i stops working after a few shots because of the cold temperatures, even with a fresh battery. The T2i autofocus is complete garbage. 75% of the time if front focuses, even with spot focusing.. on all my lenses. There is no adjustment that I can find. I completely shoot MF with it. I have tried the 7D and had great success with its autofocus, however.

I have shot with a lot of Canon bodies atleast 500-1000 shots on these... 1D, 1Ds, 1Ds MKIII, D30, 40D, 7D, XTi, T2i... By far my favorites being the 1D and the 7D. I bought my t2i for the sensor and video. I wanted to get all the glass before I dropped money on a nice body, but now I am rethinking my lenses, or brand.

I am not going Nikon. Been there, done that. I like Canon glass more, although the Nikon bodies are amazing. My wife says to stick with Canon for my lens collection and buy a 7D. She is usually right about this kind of stuff. I am leaning for that.

Also, I feel like it has been ages waiting for the successor for the 7D to come out. Could it be released in 2012?

Any advice?

Chris

Dumping that many lenses at this point would be a bit of a bummer, though people have (and do) certainly do it. I would recommend you stick with Canon. Pentax does offer good weatherproofing, but if you're only using old lenses, you'd have to build up quite a bit of equipment on that side if you do switch. I wouldn't expect a 7D update for awhile though, because an update to a 7D would pit it on more level playing field with its higher models, so those would get updated first (even though it is the best APS-C Canon).
I'm not trying to argue about Nikon, but am curious why you disliked the marque so much?

7D is newer than 5Dmk2, and they still haven't replaced THAT. Don't expect a 7D replacement soon. 2013 is my guess, Spring 2013...

Go for the 7D and sell the T2i for a 24-105L or other weather sealed lens.

Also, when it comes to anything technology-related, there's no point waiting for the 'next model' of anything. Buy the current one.

I have owned both K5 and 7D, IMO the K5 is a decent camera but it seriously let me down at 2 gigs with focussing and strange fringing at very high ISO. I would not return to Pentax again unless it was back to a 645D, that is a quality machine with excellent glass. Even the D* series of lenses for the pentax are not quite up to the mark IMO.

The 7D is very nice although I do not like the 1.6 crop as I have always had full frame bodies but the IQ from the 7D and the L glass are both excellent and reliable and I feel confident to shoot a gig with it, unlike the K5.

I think I'll go for this option. Thanks for the advice, everyone :)

Went with the 7D and replaced the ze35 with a weather sealed 24L II.

Very pleased. Only had about an hour to shoot with them so far. Heres a few samples from yesterday

Thanks for the advice

No relation to your final decision...

one of my very first serious DSLR was a "Pentax *ist DL", which I used for a while until I noticed a hot pixel on the sensor. If I didn't have that hot pixel, I would be still using Pentax for now, images were coming out pretty good... and I just checked, K5 is one of the rare machines that doesn't have any negative reviews. compare to Nikon D300 and Canon 7D, which makes it an excellent machine.

now, back to your regular post...

...congrats on you 7D. 4 of my friends personally own 7Ds and they are very happy about the results. Good luck with it.
