how great is the diversity on this site? the range of opinions presented is fantastic! for example, take the last two comments i've gotten:

7/17/2002 (7:42:07 AM) - boring

7/17/2002 (7:25:57 AM) - very well done

you gotta love it.

If I posted some of the comments on my photo, it would probably give it away to some....but I've had the same opposite reactions. And I kind of expected that to be the case. When I submitted it I realized that there would be questions as to whether it was intentional or not. You do gotta love it though because it just goes to show how everyone is going to have a different opinion about everything in life.

It's great!!!

The variety is just the of the reflection of the photo. I would take it as a compliment that you have some people hating it and some people loving it.

If everyone loved it that would be cool..but if you can't get that I go for as much hate and love as I can get. Variety!!!!

Just get the technical control stuff as good as you possibly can get and do what you want for the subject...

I am getting comments ranging from "disturbing, bizarre, love it, ummmm,""" and I LOVE IT. I want my own way of looking at things and that ain't always gonna be the popular way :-)

Im getting the same diversity.. The first few comments were all the same, telling me why they didnt like it,and how I should have changed it. then the last few comments were telling me why they loved it, and they were all commenting on the same part of the picture.... I didnt even like it that much but now with the comments iam starting to warm up to my own picture..Kinda sad isnt it?

Ive used some of the comments and applied it to my picture and wow what do you know it looks better..

I always find that the times I get the most extremely positive comments, I get
the lowest scores.

Often though it is quite a low number of comments saying they really love it, so
I assume everyone else marks it low/ average.

ronin, that's totally cool. would you be willing to post your new and improved version after the voting is over? maybe even a link to the new one under your original entry?

I sent an email to drew and said "please please change my user name, my old one sucks" And a week later he responds "done" I was haveing an identity crisis so I felt a change was due.

Gordon,

I know what you mean!

I've gotten all sorts of great comments (37 positive comments)... but what I'd like even more is just one comment from someone that scored it low to explain why-- but I don't have a single one.

It's a little aggravating to be receiving nothing but good comments, but see your score get lower! :-)

Perhaps I should just keep my mouth shut and enjoy the lack of negative comments for the first time?

I think some people don't post comments because they many times don't know how to constructively give feedback. It can be a hard thing to tell someone why you don't particularly like their image. It could be that you don't really know why you don't like it.

I know that when I spent portions of the past two days voting on 175 images (so I can participate in the texture challenge), I left comments out. I've been going back and looking at how I voted and noticed a couple of things:

1) I mis-voted in some cases and I'm changing my vote. Is that okay?

2) I'm adding comments to some photos now. I hope that is okay too.

When making comments, I'm using some critique guidelines we use on Fred Miranda's site. I include the link here for your use too: //www.fredmiranda.com/forum/guidelines.htm. These are mostly technical guidelines, but I also include emotion and creativity when I'm looking at images.

I'm not a pro. Just an avid amateur having fun... and trying to learn a few things.

Anyway, that's my two cents. You have a nice site here. There's a nice community developing. There's a lot of talent and some very cool photos.

I look forward to sharing my images with you.

LOL

Just think you might have gotten a 7 if they said WOW ! in caps:)

I love mine this time yet rating a 6. I got one remark that said they liked it but a speck of dust distracted them. It's not dust:(

My most constructive comment this week is:

7/17/2002 (4:13:45 PM) - 5

:))

I think this is a result of the requirement... ;)

I think I am averaging a 4.5 so far...Woohoo!!!!!

My goal is to produce the best photo I can possibly make with every ounce of artistic skill, technical know how and creativity and score in the 3's! I think if I can do that I may be on to the essence of my style :-)

I think the same for me...of course the style was nothing like my "usual" stuff.

I''m under you at around 4.2...you inspire an awsome challenge suggestion:
Lo-Ball -- "Submit the photo you think will score the LOWEST among DPC voters (without violating the rules or getting you or the photo suspended)." Lowest scores gets the ribbons...

Heeh...Yeah baby..fear my low score POWER!!

Actually, I just submit whatever strikes me the right way each week. I don't know what I go for specifically. The challenge is just an excuse for me to wander through interesting ideas that may not normally be sitting around looking at you.

That way I figure the photos will still be interesting to me even years from now if they were interesting ideas or a reflection of my thinking at a time in my life.

My score is also low 3.896! I don't mind this but am rather puzzled as to how it has remained so constantly at this over the last hundred od voters. Does this mean that they have all given me ones? My Maths is not good! I have had some good comments and some rather odd ones oh well maybe I will get the coveted last place!

You have to fight HARD for that last place of honor :) I''ve got you beat by about .04 right now...

The higher the number of votes, the less movement there will be in the average... For example:

If you have 10 votes of all 10''s (Avg = 10) and get a 1 , Avg = 9.182
If you have 100 votes of all 10''s (Avg = 10) and get a 1, Avg = 9.911
If you have 200 votes of all 10''s (Avg = 10) and get a 1, Avg = 9.955

So the more votes (the later in the week) the less that one vote will affect your average. So be sure to vote early :) That way your vote counts for more :)

(Yes I''m kidding about that last part)

Qyl

One way your vote can really get better ( or worse ) later in the week is if people start changing their vote.

Then the numbers have a double whammy.

If..lets say someone voted you a 4 early in the week but later in the week they start to like your photo a bit more and change their vote to a 6. You LOST a 4 and GAINED a 6. So the effect is a lot more powerful than just gaining an additional 6 vote.

That is why I think many times you see your vote rise as the week wears on.

I know I vote 3 basic scores my fist go round. A 4 for below average, a 5 for average and a 6 for above average.

Then I shift the votes around (typcially upward) as the week goes on.

I rarely if EVER lower a photo''s vote. And I am voting under a 4 LESS and LESS every week.

Remember, 4 is BELOW average. I rarely see a photo that ranks much worse than a 4..unless it is a totally black screen or something.

Why others vote so low? Unhappy childhood? Maybe they think they are better critics/photogs than they really are? Hard to say but I wonder why they even hang out on an art site if they find so little of interest here?
