A Blue moon is when there are 2 full moons in a month. It does not actually look blue!

I just went out to look at the moon. It looks BIG!! But it doesn't look blue, it has a kind of cheesy color to it :)

Great shot. That's about the best photo of the moon I can remember seeing here.

What are you using to create the water reflection effect? I assume that it is an effect?

This doesn't have to do with the moon or the challenge, but I downloaded that flood filter, and it's so fun! I thought it would look good with this picture. Thanks Marbo! :)

I'm learning so much here. This is so cool!

There is an actual even that causes the moon to turn blue. I have only ever seen it once and it was very strange. Don't know the details but it has something to do with the dusk and the sun bouncing off of a body of water on earth, reflecting on the moon and directly bouncing back to earth. I forget what the even is called but you know when it happens. The time I saw it is was really strange and didn't know what had happened until I watched the news that night and they said what it was.

We were out side and the sun had already gone down and it was dusk, not dark but not really light either. Then, all of a sudden, everything got bright again as if the sun had come back out but all colors were really strangely saturated and weird. Low and behold, the moon was a strange blue color and very bright. Lasted a few minutes and then was gone and everything was back to normal. Anyone else ever experience this or know what the technical term for it is?

Just thought I would share my experience.

Just for everybody's edification, the term "blue moon" has been traditionally assigned to the second full moon occurring within a calendar month, hence July 31st's full moon was "blue" because another one had already occurred on July 3rd. However, this definition was recently found to have been based on an error made in a Sky and Telescope magazine article in the 1940's and then widely propogated after that. To read a nice account of the history of the "blue moon," take a look at //skyandtelescope.com/ (this is a link to the S&T main page, the specific article link didn't work. If you read this after the week of August 1st, you'll have to search for the "blue moon" article). Be sure to check out the related links as well, it's quite a nice story - if your astronomically inclined, or if you just want to know what a blue moon really is!
