Watching some of the Black Friday footage on CNN - do people really NEED Xbox 360s and Wide Screen TV that badly?

Our Pathetic, deeply materialistic, Western Society these days concentrated into a single shopping trip.

On a brighter note, I managed to snag a PS3 with 75% off!! Great success!

It seems overall that there wasn't much of a reduction on some items, they say that the cheapest prices will be in early December, up until a week before Xmas, as they need to get rid of excess inventory.

decide.com gives you a good idea of what to buy now or wait till prices drop.

The best thing about Black Friday is the videos.

Who doesn't like watching a mob go crazy over $2 waffle irons.

I got my pepper spray and a tazer and I'm heading out to the store. Wish me luck...

One of my friends goes just to watch. One year he was standing outside one store and people started lining up behind him...pretty soon the line was down the block and around the corner.

Reminds me of the time when at a nature preserve, I and a friend pulled to the side of the road to look at what we thought was an exciting bird. Nope, nothing. But before we decided that, three cars had pulled up behind us, binoculars at the ready.

Meanwhile, I did my part for Black Friday. I needed a bucket and a pot holder. Drove to my neighborhood hardware store, found a parking spot in front of the place, located both; one was overpriced, neither was on sale.

Purchased them anyhow, and was home in 20 minutes.

Whew, always glad to help the economy.

And I didn't need any pepper, so refused the spray.
:) (yes! That last was a joke!)

Materialstic and Shameful are appropiate! People celebrate Christmas in their own ways, and for many reasons, but I think most need to be reminded that this is a deeply spiritual and religous holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. I do not think he would approve of all the hype. If you are of a different faith, or perhaps a non believer of any sort, why are you even celebrating this holiday at all? And then, for those who pretend to care, where is all this kindness and giving to the less fortunate in 6 mos? Sorry all, but the so called "Christmas Season" is a bitter pill that leaves a bad taste in my outlook towards my fellow mankind. Just sayin.
Thanks for letting me vent. and believe me when I tell you, this is an EXTREMELY shortened version of my attitude on this subject.

What does xmas have to do with shopping? There are bargains to be had. Everyone wants a bargain. And perhaps you should read up on where xmas actually came from. If you're religious and want to celebrate in that fashion, then good for you. But just because someone else isn't doesn't make them wrong. There's not a thing wrong with Santa.

For the record, I wouldn't brave those mobs if you paid me. LOL! ;D

What does this shameful mayhem on Black Friday have to do with shopping? I shop all year long, and don't see people getting pepper-sprayed, or into a fistfight over a waffle iron. There's something dark and bad that seems to come over some people that has nothing to do with Christmas or shopping. IMNSHO, I feel that the retail people have brought a lot of this bad mojo on themselves with their absolutely reprehensible tactics offering a very few tantalizing items for an obscenely low price. That creates the problems....of course their will be people upset, and put into a bad mood who got their hopes and expectations dashed. This behavior was bred and conditioned. It surely is a disgrace.

Maybe you don't see it often, but it does happen whenever there are "extreme" sales. The fine print in the paper always says something along the lines of "at least 5 per store" or some arbitrary number. You have to be realistic in knowing that most likely you won't be one of those 5 people getting the item. I did the black friday thing once many years ago when my daughter was young. I stood in line for 6 hours in the freezing cold and was first in line when the store opened. Guess what. The item I went for was already sold out. No one was in front of me. So how did that happen? I never did it again. I'd rather pay more than deal with that crap. But it is all about the shopping. //abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2011/11/black-fridays-dark-origins/

And Jeb, what I was kind of replying to was the implied statement that if you aren't Christian, you shouldn't be celebrating Christmas at all.

I don't know. Are the waffle irons to make the waffles flat? Couldn't they just make pancakes instead?
