Anyone interested in this? I was thinking we could setup a ongoing thread where we could post digital art we have and are working on and maybe get input from others and learn tips and tricks and new techniques. I have a few personal ideas I am in the planning stages of so I thought I would see if anyone wanted to jump on board and go on the journey with me. I figure this would be best as an ongoing thread as opposed to a monthly side since it takes a bit more work plus the holiday season is upon us. If you are interested sign up below.

I am also going to start a list of tutorials and learning sites as we go that may be able to help anyone out.

Dozens of Photoshop tutorials with several more advanced techniques. LINK

Well, I like expert editing... I don't know if I have time enough to be constantly with you, but count me in, if it's not a problem :)

After my stellar placement in Poe, I would love to share with you all what not to do :) I don't know how much I will submit but would love to learn and maybe submit something from time to time - if that's OK please add me. Thanks.

I have absolutely NO idea about expert editing - barely grasp basic editing actually - but if that isn't a problem I'd love to join and throw the occassional effort in...

I'm clueless, but need/want to learn. I would love to play along!

I'm in, I just don't know how much time I will have to do this. I would be happy to explain how I did some of my past expert entries though.

This is my first attempt combining multiple images to make one image, its crude and not that great...but its a start. Fun stuff for sure. Hoping to make more progress as I continue to experiment.

For all of you unfamiliar with compositing images (the "most different" aspect of Expert editing), I suggest you check out any tutorials (here or elsewhere) on using masks/alpha channels, and how to "paint" on them to fine-tune your selections.

ETA: This technique will also enhance your ability to apply adjustment layers selectively in Advanced editing challenges -- see this How-To for my best example of how this can be used.

Another thing which makes compositing obvious is when the various elements being combined have significantly different light/shadows intensity, quality, angles, etc.; try to choose "components" which will match up.

Thanks General.I have noticed with my own when I combine images the lighting is glaringly different and screams of being poorly put together, I will have to check out that link and hopefully I can get a nice list of links for future reference.

Listening to an expert can be daunting, especially at first. Hearing about the 500 steps that go into creating an image can easily seem overwhelming.

I am by no means an expert, but have grown by leaps and bounds in the past year.

My first suggestion is practice. Composite images that in no way belong together and try to make it look as good as you can. Play with the settings/layers/blending and/or try two or three approaches to get the same effect.

My second suggestion is find good tutorials and try to mimic their process. Worth1000.com is a great resource for practicing and tutorials. (Don't go straight to YouTube and try to find good tutorials; you'll sift through hours of junk for nothing. Go straight to a known good source.)

That is a very good piece of advice, I have spent those hours looking thru the junk.

+ 1

Great advice. Besides the good sources on the Net I sometimes buy some Photoshop magazines very useful (especially the ones with DVDs) where they show step by step works. The best way at the beginning (but not onle at the beginning) to get into expert editing world that is completely different than a simple enhancing of an image. You have to study shadows (the most important thing) and the way you must isolate things from the background. I always use the pen tool unless the work is very easy.
