Why people voting down photos with no text?
Are such people IDIOTS or the requirements for the challenge are not clear enough ?!

Challenge: DPC Album Cover
Type: Member Challenge
Rules: Advanced Editing (Updated 4/25!)
Voting Deadline: Sunday, August 1st, 2004
Description: The ficticious band "DPC" needs a photograph for their first album cover and three words to go along with their acronym. Your challenge is two-fold: first, come up with a three-word name for the band to explain to interviewers what "DPC" stands for, and second, photograph something appropriate for their debut album cover. Be sure and title your submission the 3 words you came up with for the band. (For example: "Deranged Primitive Cantaloupe".)

Does not say "MUST HAVE TEXT" !
GRRRR

I didn't vote you down on no text. In my comments I stated that no text would probably hurt you in scoring because....people are people.

Personally, I didnt let no text affect my scoring of the image which was what was most important.

There might be a handful of people voting down text-free images, but I doubt there's enough to have a large impact. In most cases, I would guess that low scores would be for other reasons, not just absence of text. Even if a commentor mentions the "perceived omission," they might not deduct points.

Just tell me "your photo suck" and I will be perfectly happy with that!

But If you tell me "NEED TEXT" and nothing about the photo quality that what PO's me !

I just took a quick scan of my voting. Of the submissions with no text added (including submission with text in the photo, but not actually added after the fact), my break down is as follows:

10 - 0
9 - 2
8 - 1
7 - 3
6 - 3
5 - 4
4 - 1
3 - 1
2 - 0
1 - 0

True, this stat is pretty much meaningless ... but I took the time to look, so I thought I'd post :) Sorry if you're taking a beating, pitsa. Knowing your previous work, I imagine I've given you a high vote.

I commented on every photo in the challenge.

I indicated on several that lack of text will hurt the score.
I didn't mean it would hurt the score that I was assigning to the picture. I was trying to indicate that I could see beyond the "text issue" and still judge the picture on it's merits!
ie: "Nice image but no text will probably hurt your score".
I didn't mark the score down on any picture because of no text, but I did indicate to people to expect low scores from people because of it.

Pitsaman. You take awesome photos, I've admired your portfolio several times.

(Some text snipped out of the above quote.)

Text was an issue with me - and many of my comments were concerning text. In many cases - the text was so BAD that the image would have been much better without it. (Text was OPTIONAL - as we all should have known.)
My scores were based upon the idea, execution and image - even though I commented on the text - it did not really affect the scores.

This challenge suffered from the very start. The rules were changed twenty minutes after it was announced and I simply ran with the initial rules. Did my work and then Sunday night my jaw dropped when I noticed the addendum, that text could be added. I had no time for a reshoot and so I simply added text as a last resort, but I wish I had not missed the update because this renders my comp obsolete with the initial rules.

Consider: updates are very dangerous because one never suspects that the rules are going to change once the challenge is announced. So yes, because of this my comp has been hit hard with the infamous 2's.

Just keep complaining about the comments you do receive and pretty soon nobody will want to leave any...

i think the point here is the majority of entries - people designed THE album cover. the challenge was to take the photo that WOULD BE on the album cover - i think text should not have been allowed given the wording of the challenge topic.

and voting down substantially merely for lack of text on the entry is not fair given the description of the challenge topic.

i have voted more images down for poor use of text than for lack of...

Whilst it doesn't say MUST HAVE TEXT it also doesn't spell out MUST BE GOOD PHOTO either. Am I not permitted to take that into account when scoring/ voting?

It's up to a voter what they take into account during scoring and what importance they place on the inclusion or not or use or not of items, techniques etc.

Personally, I am generally (though NOT always) scoring higher for entries with text for this challenge because they really show me that thought has been given to how the image chosen interacts with text. And text does change composition and feel quite a bit in many cases.

PS Always nice when those who don't vote the way you want them to are referred to as idiots. Perhaps you could just tell us all how to vote each image and there would be no "idiots" for you to endure.

Exactly! I don't know if this only happens to me, wich I doubt, but lately I only recive positive comments and no comments. Almost zero constructive criticism yet many people are giving really low scores. This is bad, maybe it's time for some rules against harashing commenters with PM's and in the forums during challenges?

I don't feel too good about posting mine now! I will take it out!

I felt that the text added a certain authenticity to the album cover. It became much easier to envision a photograph as cover art if there were graphics. I made a few comments to the effect of 'text would help convince me", particulalry when I felt a photo was being shoehorned to fit the challenge, or more aptly put, when a band name was being shoehorned to fit a photo. I felt that the band name should have come first, then the photo developed around it, but there were clearly cases of folks just finding something they had shot within the time frame and desperately inventing a name to fit. Only a few entries were lacking text.

I almost missed it myself, but I had about an hour-and-a-half before the deadline to whip something up. Had I known I could have added text I would have planned my photo to include it. I was really impressed with some of the authentic touches people used. I love making cover art for my CD mixes so this challenge was right up my alley. I was pretty disappointed to discover I missed an opportunity to get creative with text. I got some valid advice on how my text could be improved but in both cases the advice was tucked in with very positive comments.

I can only speak for myself, when I give a low score, I ususally don't give comments because, I feel I am not expert enough to give advice to anyone and also, if it is obvious, I don't want to be one of 86 people to tell that person thatthere is a funny yellow thing which is distracting. I don't know. That's just me.

edited for typos.
