I want to re-load some of the images I've uploaded in the past with smaller file sizes to make room in my portfolio.

If I upload a new file into an existing portfolio image, will the image reference number stay the same? Also, will the views and comments remain, or will they be lost?

Thanks,
Ara

Upload a test photo and try it out...

Everything stays the same... I've done this with most of my photos with no side effects.

But I didn't check the reference number...

Thanks, I didn't think of that... but then again, it's 6 am and I've been up for 24 hours or so. :(

I was wondering about images posted as thumbs in threads and referenced in image descriptions. If the ID changes, does it break old threads... that kind of thing.

Actually, it would be really cool if you could automatically downsize images from the portfolio manager.

I verified that when you replace a portfolio image, the image ID does not change. it's therefore not too difficult to downsize your portfolio images. Here's a quick way:
1.) Open a folder in your portfolio in which you want to downsize the images
2.) Click "browse collection" for the folder
3.) For each photo you want to downsize, do the following:
a.) Open the photo page in a new window (right-click, "open in new window")
b.) Right click, copy, paste into your image editor
c.) Resave at higher compression. Name it so that you can identify which portfolio image it is.
4.) Now return to editing the portfolio folder. Do the following for each image:
a.) Open the editing page for an image; note the file size.
b.) Browse to the mew compressed image on your drive
c.) Click "update". Note the reduced file size.

Hardly automatic, but if done systematically, folder by folder, it can be done in less than 1 minute per image.

do it the suggested way....deleting the image and reposting a smaller version will not save the image ID...and you will lose any favorites you had on that image. Found that out the hard way. Was uploading images without first resizing to 640 and there was a lot of compression after the upload. Had a pic with 5 or so favorites (a rarity for me) and I reloaded it to improve the posted version...all the favorites disappeared. :-(

On a side note, would DPC consider an option to add say an extra 10MB of storage for an additional yearly fee?

Bump.

Image Ready can reduce the file size (smaller than PS save for web) and it also can include the EXIF. The only thing I can't figure out how to do (in IR) is change the image size of the optimized version w/o changing the original. Can that be done?

It's been often-requested, but I don't know the chances of that happening. All such changes are "on hold" until the rollout of the updated DPC Prints site ...
