Greetings DP Challenge photographic artists!
I wanted to start a discussion to find out how you are showing your clients their photographs before they order?
Are you?:
Showing them prints online for a limited time? With 3rd party fulfillment?
Giving them small (basic corrected) contact sheets or 4x6 proofs?
Projecting them? Into a framed blank canvas? On the wall? A movie screen?
What are you average portrait sales? Sizes?
...just curious and think the discussion would be healthy. I'll post mine (for those that don't know already) after this gets rolling.... |

I use my gallery:
Photos by Jojo Gallery
and it is PW protected per individual client. Makes it easy for family from everywhere to order. Sizes are listed. I do the fulfillment myself. Ensures accuracy. :) |

| it depends on the client and situation. i typically sell through my site, but have accommodated non-pc clients with 4x6 proof books and order forms. i saw your post about projecting and am considering that ;-) |

I am living proof that projection SELLS! Think about this.... the largest you can show something on a monitor is 21x17? Maybe a little bigger... The smallest portrait I sold the other day was a 16x20 (I price that one at $940 for 2.5 inch stretched canvas, but gave them 50% off for $470). When I showed them the actual size of a projected 8x10 they laughed at how small it looked compared to the 30x40. I start out huge and go smaller if need be. The size reference is amazing!
Its Soooo much easier to start big and go smaller than starting with a 4x6 and go larger.
When Chuck Lewis said it worked like magic I laughed and thought "BullS#!$"
Unfortunately I had to postpone the other 2 projections because my girlfriend's grandma passed the other day, but I will definitely sell at least $500 at each of the next 2.
I realize that alot of pro photographers are set in their ways, but please check out the system. It will change your life!
I challenge anyone to bring up objections to why they won't look into something like this.
....and again... I DO NOT get a commission for pluging CJLewis either. I'm just the guy that if I like something - I will try my darnedest to get you to check it out! |

I actually do the same thing with my headshots. Do you only focus on headshots? (I assume LA would be a very lucrative place yet have a lot of competition)
A key to the system is on the front end as well: Find the "warm fuzzies"... e.g. people that cry at movies, have a family, prioritize photography, art, ballet,etc..
If they don't appreciate what you do (and if after your try, its impossible to sway their opinions) than I just move on. They will be a bigger headache than the little money they do invest. |

So Johanna, in your head shots do you fulfill expectations for the standard vanilla, or do you art it up and try to advance the standard a step or two? |

The "external" styles come and go like celebrity marriages. I try to keep up with the trends, and pay a slight homage to them. My approach is to capture not just likeness images, but personality images. My images also tend to be slightly darker, and more "active" than standard headshots.
I don't know that the projection system would work for single headshots, but can definitely see the advantage to a big family or corporate situation. But I am looking into the site, which seems to have a lot of useful information. |
