Just a quick hi, recently joined and have a pic in a challenge (its a bit daunting being judged by so many) However im sure it will improve my photography 10fold.A quick question when I try to insert a pic into a forum thread using the icon above it asks me for the URL?

Welcome first off!

Here is what you need to do.

Say you want to upload this image here...

//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=974731

From the URL take the last set of numbers and copy them to the place that it asks for a URL.

It will look like this.

[thumb] 974731 [/thumb]

(no spaces though)

The image icon is for embedding an image hosted elsewhere, and yes, it needs the URL. I often use it for smileys that I keep on my own webspace.

For images in your DPChallenge portfolio, use the next to the last icon that looks like two squares and provide it just the image ID number. Here's a visual:

What he said.. He gives better explanations..

I should save that image so that in case you aren't online I can just post that instead of trying to explain it.. As you can see I am no good as explaining. Lol!!!

I think that you have made a terrible mistake, Brennan. Are you confusing Spiffy with Slippy?

Common mistake. Not. Cut Brennan some slack, he thinks he is Ernest Hemmingway.

eta: How rude of me. WELCOME, Adam!

It's not me you have to worry about, it's Grog. There would be dodo birds all over the Outback today if he hadn't hunted them to extinction to feed that damn tribe of his.

Back to the O P, Welcome to DPC, and I hope you enjoy your time here.
If the photo that you want to insert as a thumbnail is in your DPC portfolio, you can open it there, and copy the group of 6 numbers at the end of the URL when it is open. Then when you open the window to post a reply, do what Yo_Spiff said.
If it is in another site, like Flikr, open it, copy the whole URL, then open the " Reply" window in the DPC thread, and use the icon with the globe in it to insert the URl.
To post a thumbnail, the image has to first be uploaded into your DPC portfolio, or workshop.

If you are on Flickr, simply use the BBCode that Flickr offers. HTML thumbnails won't work in forum threads, though you can use them in your photographer notes under any of your portfolio uploads.

Have we confused you yet?

He might not be Hemingway, but he's probably Earnest.

G'day Adam. I'm new to DPC too. Its a lot of fun. I've only just plucked up the courage to enter my first challenge and am giving thought to entering my second. Learning how to use PS is the real challenge! Lol You'll find everyone on DP very helpful and friendly. Good luck!!
