Hopefully some of you superbly connected people can help me out here. I work for a newspaper that will be transferring all of the production to all newspapers in the chain into one central location. This is a small, family owned chain, and financial resources are nil. We are thinking it would be nice if we could setup an instant messaging service to use until everyone gets used to working remotely. I have, unfortunately, been tasked with this. I have no clue about what IM programs are decent, so I am hoping for a few suggestions. The only requirement is that it has to be mac compatible. Thanks!

what are the requirement? is it just chat communication or do you need project collaboration tools?

Are you looking for a brand name service or could it be something off the shelf.

Maybe you can use Jabber. //www.jabber.org
We use it at work.
We have our own server, and I think it can only be used internally.
I don't know how it has been installed and configured, so I can't help you with that, but it may be a good starting point.

From the website:
Jabber.org is the original IM service based on XMPP, the open standard for instant messaging, and one of the biggest nodes on the open XMPP network. Create an account by visiting register.jabber.org or one of the other public XMPP services, then download a free client, log in, and start chatting!

thanks guys, keep em comin! tholmir, I looked at that but I am not a mac guy at all, and the install looks a bit intimidating anyway with this.

Iamellkatz, I dont really have a preference, just something easy and reliable.

Mike- just chat. We have the rest of the collaboration figured out

This is probably more simplistic than what you need but www.meebo.com is a nice web based chat program that lets you connect to a myriad of chat clients, including AOL, facebook, msn, yahoo, and possibly (I'm not sure) their own chat server.

Meebo is great and easy to use. But if you/they were looking for more of a custom tailored to your needs type application. They I may have something that you could use. I have to see if I still have the source files though..

I came across this article yesterday:

I work at a newspaper with three offices. We just use iChat. Works like a charm.

How paranoid do you need to be??

If your don't need your own closed server then pick a single one like AIM, skype, icq or whatever (see this wikipedia for a summary). It's easier to keep everyone on the same service.

Let people pick their client (unless you pick one of the closed ones)... personally I like Trillian to consolidate them all.

Meant to add - Do NOT let people use their personal ones IMO it's just a bad idea. I would also enforce a naming std... Company_Last_First or similar so anyone can search the service you pick for a prefix (make it uncommon enough most people will not reuse it).

This is not mac only.
You need a server: //www.jabber.org/network
and a client: //www.jabber.org/download-a-client

We are using PSI as the client, and it's working well on Windows.

But this solution is good only if you need your own private server.

If you want to setup something that uses an external server, there are many services for that, as the others have suggested.
