Since 'in the style of' challenges appear to be popular in recent times I thought I'd suggest a challenge in the style of a young man (now about 21) who is probably the DPC grown photographer that has gone the farthest the quickest. His lighting and compositional styles have become well defined. His achievements are numerous; they include shooting the poster pictures for the movie 'Twilight' and being featured in a National Geographic documentary (Faces of a Vanishing World). It is striking that in just a few years he went from shooting at this level at the age of 14 to this at the age of 18.. In addition to his profile pictures here ( Joey Lawrence) you can visit his website and his blog to see his most recent work and become familiar with his style. I hope Langdon and the community will be receptive to this idea.

But only if you can lick your own elbow....for the rest of us...well we will just sit back and admire his growth and then say...we knew him when....!

Joey has been on my FAV Photographer list since early 2007. This is a great idea, but Andres, Señor_Kasper may be the only one here who could emulate him. Wait, I take that back - I can think of a couple of others. Still this would be an excellent exercise, and the research into what makes a "Joey" would be worth a whole year of art classes.

I'd love this challenge. I've been a fan of Joey for quite a number of years as well, and it probably shows in my work, especially in the stuff I've done in the last two years.

The hard part would be picking one element of his style to copy. The environmental portraits, the ethnic documentary-esque portraits, the grungy early work, the high-concept band shots, etc, etc.

The reason I found dpc is because of reading an interview of Joey Lawrence who mentioned it. I would enjoy this challenge.

after looking through his portfolio i think this is a wonderful idea, however, i think the "style of" challenges have been much more enjoyable with the artist being an active participant in the challenge. as mr. lawrence is an intermittent visitor, not sure he would have the time nor inclination to involve himself during the two week event. and it would be unfair to ask him to do so.

repeat, i think it's a wonderful idea.

Can we quit with the in the style of _________ challenges? These guys do some great work, but that's their style. Some of us are trying to develop our own style. I won't be entering anymore "In the Style of" challenges.

I think there is some validity in the "In the Style of" challenges. Testing new waters is a way for you to develop your own style. You never know what you like shooting until you try it. You don't have to completely take the other photo's style as yours, but you will probably learn something from it and merge at least a little piece of it into your true style. And I don't think that's a bad thing by any means.

In photo school, one of the assignments for the second-year masters students was to do a full project in the style of your complete opposite. You'd be surprised how many students ended up adopting that style after the assignment because the opposite fit even better than the rut style they had originally worked in.

I do like the "In the style of..." challenges and think they are a good learning experience. In this case I feel I would have to sit the challenge out as I could never pull off a JL type shot, but I'd love to vote on it just the same.

Yeah, the "In the style of" challenges are getting kinda tiresome. Yes, there is something to be learned by mimicking the work of others, but unlike technical skills, style is an evolutionary process for an artist. It shouldn't be treated like cable television with random flipping, hoping to find something good.

I can't believe we never did this. JL is the most googlable dpc'er ever.
