While I wait for my G5 to release, I wonder what computers you are all using? OS? Photo Software? Monitor?

I have an ancient (1 1/2 year old) HP Pavilion ze4125 laptop. It has a 40GB hardrive and I'm running low, I only have 16GB left, which I dont understand, since I dont have photos or songs or too many programs on it. I've tried deleting unnecessary stuff, but I only end up gaining less than 1GB. But anyways, I have Photoshop 7 and I run Windows XP. I really wanna get one of those little Sony Vaio laptops.

Main/Big PC - Self-built
AMD 2100+
1024 MB of RAM
Run of the mill 30GB HD
Nvidia GF3 w/ 64MB RAM
KDS 17" Monitor
Windows XP Pro

Laptop - Dell Inspiron 8500
15" UWSXGA Monitor
GF4toGo Video with 64MB RAM
512MB RAM
PIVm Processor (I forget the Mhz right now...)
Windows XP Pro

Old-Standby PC - Self-Built
AMD Athlon 700mhz
768 MB RAM
GF2 w/ 64MB RAM
Whatever Monitor I have laying around.
Windows 2000 Pro

All of these PCs more then meet my needs when it comes to photo editing.

I prefer to do as little editing to the photos I take as possible. Limiting myself to cloning out small blemishes, altering the lighting here and there, sometimes dodging or burning a section of an image to give it more character.

I haven't had much of a need for anthing more complicated then that.

As for software, I use PS Elements 2.0 and sometimes The GIMP 2.0. I wouldn't mind getting ahold of PS, but $700 is a bunch of money for what I would end up doing with it. I wouldn't mind getting ahold of it and one day, if I am able to sell my photos for some decent cash, I will purchase it.

Custom built (my myself a couple of years ago):

Dual AMD AthlonMP 1800+
1 GB mem
40 GB harddrive
ATI Radeon 8500 (64MB)
...this feeds an even older 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 900u.

The drive I use only for what I am currently working on. I condemned an old Pentium 100 to server duty with a RAID array for long-term storage. Use my DVD burner for backup and even longer-term storage.

Windows XP Pro
Photoshop CS
ACDSee
ExifReader

I would really like to upgrade, but ... a new camera is looking far more attractive. The computer does what I need it to do, and does it well. If it didn't it would have been replaced long before now.

Oh that's not necesarily true. You could run PS on that PC. The only issue is that Win9X isn't so good with memory management and that is where you will run into issues. You may also have integreated video, that mixed with Win98 can make for a slow PS experience.

Look on the brightside, it's old enough that just about anything you upgrade to will seem like you went from a Yugo to a High-end European Sports Car...

home (which is also work)
Dual 2GB G5, 1.5 GB Ram, big old ViewSonic monitor
PhotoShop CS...

Been using a mac (and loving it too) longer than I'd care to admit. Let's just say I remember when Aldus PageMaker fit on a single sided floppy and my computer had no hard drive.

Things were so simple then

Oh, *nods* I'm sure I could run it, but getting it to function at a decent rate...nah...even with Adobe PhotoDeluxe and my 3mp photo files it struggles, so I doubt anything much beefier would do very well.

And you're right, I'm gonna be getting a laptop for college and I can't wait! Lol, it'll be like 2-5x everything I have now (well, except for HD space cause of the external) and I will be in heaven. ^_^

You and me both. Remember when PageMaker 2 came out and suddenly you were able to rotate text 90 degrees on a wicked-fast SE? And then we discovered... color. Whoa. Those were heady days.
