Hello.
I've been looking into getting some flash units with slave capabilities. However, I'm curious about something, and a little confused too. To my understanding, a visual slave fires when it detects light from another flash. Fine and dandy so far, right? But...would't the slave fire too late if it only fires after the master flash does? Maybe I'm missing something.

The reaction time of the slave flash is fast enough not to make any difference, and will be on when the shutter is open. What would worry me more is if the primary flash uses E-TTL which uses a pre-flash to meter the scene. This pre-flash might trigger the slave flash unless you get a slave that can handle E-TTL or uses wireless communication. |

Compared to the reaction time of the circuit detecting the master flash & firing the slave, your shutter speed is slooooow. The slave will fire after the master, but well within the time that the shutter is open.
edit:
Typed too slow again!
Regarding triggering, yes, you need a master/slave system that you know will work together so the slave doe snot fire on the pre-flash(es).

why not emancipate your photo slaves and use a pocket wizard or other wireless transmitter/receiver combo?
