Welcome Emma!

You ask the questions and the answers (right and wrong!) should come pouring in...

Once you feel good about this stuff, jump out of the pool and into the shark tank, enter a few challenges and get some feedback!

Good to have you, and don't worry about the crazy people, we don't like... eat brains or anything..

Hello Emma!
You will find out this a very knowledgeable, resourceful and supportive community, and you will be able to glean valuable info just by hanging out in the forums.
When comes to the challenges, everyone is very competitive. But it's lots of fun - and we learn a lot, starting with having a thicker skin...
So, welcome to the zoo, and brace yourself for the ride!

Welcome Emma,

Some of the short hand phrases and initials can be daunting at the start, but hang in there and all will become clear. Well, not all, but some of the fog will lift over time.

To get an idea of how stuff works, take a look at this recent thread on a member looking for a bit of advice on a horse picture for a competition. It's a helpful group. We may be wrong half the time, but always willing to help.

Welcome Emma. One of the best, and often overlooked, resources on DPC are the side challenges. They're not competitive at all, and incredibly supportive and fun. If you don't feel like your work is yet up to being judged in a challenge, enter a side challenge. Looking forward to your work!

I've been here a while but have never entered a side challenge, i've seen them going but i've never really understood what they are and how they work. Are there any rules or guidelines anywhere? Maybe there should be a sticky at the top of the side challenge forum which explains all.

Bill.

The OP creates the rules and guidelines for side challenges. They are in the forums. The pictures I entered in side challenges have a higher average number of comments compared to the ones in the standard challenges. I like them a lot.

Normally the first post of the Side Challenge thread describes how that particular one will work.

For example, see this ones:

You're looking like a paid up member, ems, so you should be able to click roll over on the bar at the top of these pages 'My Home' which should show a drop down menu with 'My Portfolio' in second place. Click thou upon this wording, and Lo! up pops nothing much because you haven't uploaded anything yet.

A little thing saying 'Upload New Image' is there though - click it.

Browse - etc - you can do that stuff.

If you're having trouble saving images on your hard drive or converting them to preferred (800 pixel jpeg) format - scream out and help will come.

Once you have pictures in your portfolio then it's dead easy to include thumbnails in posts

but first things first ...

You could purchase a one month membership for $5 or just pay the $25 for the year - then you would have a portfolio to upload images to and easily post them in the forums as raish described. Not required, though - you can store them somewhere else, along with thumbnails and post the thumbs linked to the images, but that's more complicated and people wouldn't be able to comment on your images and have those comments stored here on DPC. I'd spring for the membership - it's more than worth it. PLUS, there a secret Member's Only forum with free donuts. ;-)

Hi everyone. I've put up a few shots so far (earlier in the year) but didn't do at all well. As I've gradually improved I look at those images now and cringe. Haven't done anything for a while, bit intimidated by the excellence being shown by others. I see mention of "teams" and wonder how to join one to improve my photography and gain the confidence to participate more. I think having others to bounce ideas off would be fantastic. Can anyone give me guidance here on how to join a team please? Thanks for reading.

Hi Michelle....good to see a local on here. The Emerald DPCérs are probably your closest members....so welcome. Side challenges are a great way to improve your photography. The teams are part of the WPL, DPL type comp that runs on DPC on occasion. You will have to wait until the next event gets announced which could be some time as they are currently in the middle of one now. In the meantime, keep entering challenges and side challenges and don't forget to comment on images as that in itself can hep you more than you realise.

Hi Judi, Have just been through Emerald, on our way to Sapphire! Can I join you guys? I know I have a really lot to learn :) Sorry but I'm clueless about side challenges and I can see I will have to explore DPC more thoroughly to find out what I'm missing. I'm always looking at results on it though, as most of the images are awesome and so inspirational. Would you be so kind as to give me a heads up when the next side challenge is on? Any help hugely appreciated. This is exciting....thanks for replying. Michele
ps OMG, I've just seen your images.......amazing!

I'm not in any of the side challenges or teams at the moment. Keep an eye on the threads as you will see when the next team comp comes up. As for side challenges they are going all the time. Check here for the current ones that you could possible join. I love shooting out at Sapphire...you must go to the camp and check out some of the details in the dwellings and the Eureka flags.
