Is it worth the 2K they are asking for it?

I dropped my 17-40 mm MK II L and my lense got scratched. Now in the market to get another wide angle lense

I've read great things about the 14 mm L prime but it's about 2K for it

Does anyone here own one and can you vouch for it?

There are 47 of them, in fact. I don't have any personal experience with the lens. The reviews I have read are much more positive on the mkII version of the lens than the original.

I wish I could give you feedback on that puppy, but I can't :-(

Man, 2k for what would be an extremely specialized lens. Your results may vary, but I gotta imagine a wide zoom like the 16-35 is going to serve you more.

Thanks Doc, I'll have to compare.
I've grown attached to prime lenses because they tend to deliver great image quality

Ill have to check into the 16-35 as well

I use this lens occasionally, it can take excellent images, the extreme wideness is not always useful though. There are problems with CA and stretching at the edges. I'd recommend hiring it for a good try before considering a purchase (as I would with any lens)

any thoughts on the upcoming Canon 8-15mm?

Other than it being a f/4 it seems a great piece of glass - should come out at the end of the year.
I would very much like to get a wider glass as well, since my 24-70 is not very wide. Do not see that many choices out there.

Hmmm, an out of the box idea is to rebuy your 17-40 and then get a used 5d body. I never remember the crop factor on the 1d, but it's not full frame right?

Isn't the 1D the top of the line Canon? And full frame?

The 1D MK IV the doc is referring to is not full frame. However I do have a 5D MK II that I use for all my portrait and Landscape work.

Ill have to do some thinking. Maybe the 16-35 would be a better choice for more versatility. I might have to loan both out and see for myself. But if anyone has any input please give it :D

There is also talk of an upcoming Canon 14-24 but it is just speculative, no official announcement has been made. I think that would be a perfect focal range to fill out the Canon lens lineup.
