This happened less than an hour ago as two guys tried beating a light and crossed paths.

And, you're not a PBase supporter so you can't directly link :)

Also is it a big deal to make it possible to upload directly from ones hard drive?

Someone has to pay for the extra bandwidth and disk space, although this place must already use a lot.

Gordon, I think he meant "from his own pc's hard drive".

Ah, in which case you still have to pay extra for the bandwidth and set up your own web server. You can certainly do it, but you probably have to upgrade your web access to one that allows you to run servers and also commit to having your computer connected to the net 24/7.

Most ISP contracts specifically don't allow you to do this for 'home' accounts though some do. It is certainly possible, though.

Good advice BadPigg. Last summer I hiked into the Hoe rainforest with my camera and didn`t get a shot at wildlife all day. The next morning after breakfast I decided to walk down to the river from camp to stretch. I didn`t take my camera with me thinking "what could possibly happen here". Five minutes later I was nose to nose with an moose with a bad attitude. I will never get the chance again to shoot the shot that I had there! I was so mad that I didn`t have my camera:(

Clicker, thats one of those "wouldnt that've made a great shot " moments. But would you have had time to ask Mr. Moose to strike a pose? And would he have complied? My experience with moose is they are a little rude. My Mother and Stepfather live close to the Beartooth Mountains on 40 acres of river bottom land which is full of wildlife. She has practically stepped on moose lying in the grass. She also has Black bear and other critters. I wish I could spend more time there shooting wildlife (pics).
Gordon, Some photo posting sites Like Webshots allow you to upload from your PC. Is that what your referring too?

Driving on the interstate yesterday, we passed a car in the median that was on fire. All of the passengers had gotten out, but the entire underside of the car was engulfed in flames. I DID have my camera, but it's still not always possible to catch those shots.

I had my camera with me tonight as a guy drove through a red light, but I only had time to yell at him, not snap a pic of his license plate.

i always have my camera in my pocket.. always. i have caught a few funny videos of my history teacher "reenacting" the battle of the Alamo.. ill try to give you a link and get the vid on the net.. it really is worth watching. its hilarious. my teacher put a hole in the ceiling in the process (you would have to watch) ill try to get it up tomorrow.

also, imagestation is a free and pretty good place to host your photos, although you have to register to view them, etc.. i have my own website, so my problem is solved somewhat..

"Always carry your camera with you....." so that when you bump the person's car infront of you with yours, you can prove it was a bump and not a slam. :0(

Well it depends what you originally meant with your question. Did you mean why won't dpchallenge let you upload any pictures you want and have them shown in the forums ? If you did, then the reason is probably the additional disk space requred on dpchallenge and additional bandwidth/load it would place on their servers.

If you mean't why can't you put pictures into the forum direct from your hard disk, and store/ provide it yourself, then you can - but you'd have to set up your own web server on your own PC at home with all that entails in terms of maintenence and additional costs/ contracts with your service provider.

Good advice, Karen. Unless you're one of those lucky sods that gets out his (or her) camera and everything starts happening!

It will be soon.
Check the news on the main pbase page which gives a link to the pricing structure.
I for one will be paying, it's a great service (the best of its kind IMO) and should become more reliable once the peeps with 1000+ full res images have gone.

I have a link to a long list of alternative sites (some free, some not) which I will post when I get home tonight.

My camera goes with me everywhere I go, even if it just to go into town shopping. My wife looks at me sometimes as if I am bonkers! I think there is a little bit of jealousy there somewhere. That is unless I am taking photos of her :-)

People who "paid" at pBase when it was a voluntary donation got (I think) a year's membership, whatever they paid. I forget if it's good for a year from when you signed up or from when the site went fee-based (December '02), but it says "it won't affect people who previously paid for a long time."
It is a bargain at $23/year/100MB.
