I upgraded to Mac OS 10.7 Lion today. It was mostly easy. No problems. The feel of the gestures will take a little while to be automatic.

I don't know much about macs, and this has nothing to do with the real world at all, but you may find it amusing:

When I saw that Apple is taking us from "Snow Leopard" to "Lion" I thought to myself, "Snow Leopard was way cool, Lion is so overdone, that's a step backwards, guys!" :-)

I'm actually giving some thought to migrating to a MacBook Pro in the not-too-distant future...

I did too. I agree, the gestures don't feel right. I tried to get use to the scrolling behavior, but couldn't, so I turned off inverted scrolling and now I'm much happier.

It's quite a bit nicer to vote on DPC while Safari is in full screen mode. Really cuts down on distractions.

Beyond that, I haven't really noticed a lot different yet, but I'm still exploring.

I made the mistake of installing it at work. When it rebooted:

Network connections not available.

A quick Google search reveals that there are problems with it communicating with Active Directory services.

Might have to roll it back to Snow Leopard. Currently installing it on my home machine though.

Umm, I have only just made the leap from Windows to Mac, what IS Snow Leopard and Lion....?

You get used to the scrolling, I've stuck with it and now it's natural, though I still don't see the advantage, I never had a problem going between my Mac and iPad.

The gestures are nice, though it helps if you have the unibody model with the larger touchpad. Full screen apps are great, I'm hoping eventually everyone will build it into the apps and it will always be the same keyboard shortcut.

I don't see the huge difference between mission control and exposeƩ, but it does handle the multiple desktop issue much better than spaces ever did.

Liking it, especially at the price they sold it for!

The Apple marketing people were running out of big cats:
Versions of Mac OS X:
Mac OS X v10.0 (Cheetah)
Mac OS X v10.1 (Puma)
Mac OS X v10.2 (Jaguar)
Mac OS X v10.3 (Panther)
Mac OS X v10.4 (Tiger)
Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard)
Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Mac OS X v10.7 (Lion)

Can't really revert to the grand, but diminutive Bobcat, can they?

What effect does it have on Photoshop CS5, Light Room 3, and any printers, wireless or connected ? Do these still operate normally or do we need to make adjustments to have them work properly?

In theory, the apps that worked under 10.6.8 will work under 10.7, except for any and all PowerPC apps.

i especially like the apparent zippiness of Apple's Aperture.

It'll be a while before I upgrade. I don't have an extra hard drive around to see how badly it'd kill my hackintosh system.

Just voted on Macro, not insects, nor flowers. I voted on Safari browser in app full screen mode. Nice to have no distractions!!!! It seemed to be very snappy and responsive.

I just bought a MacBook Pro last week (my first Mac). It came with a free upgrade to Lion through the Up To Date program (I think that's what it's called). When I try to upgrade it asks for my serial # to validate my eligibility. Once it passes that it asks me to log into the app store but then just dumps me into the app store's main page. Any ideas how I actual get the free upgrade?

Yes, you need to use your AppleID Account, which spans iTunes, the Apple Store and the App store. Possibly, you haven't established this account, yet? If not, then sign your name on the dotted line.

No I do actually have an account. I've even used it for purchases already. It just doesn't give me any instructions after I log in.

I just ran into the first "gotcha" as far as DPC is concerned with Lion. Be very very diligent about keeping your original files.

Opened my Pattern entry in Graphic Converter (wonderful tool). I resized, and it saved. I tried a sharpening operation (turned out to be adjustable, so not legal), it saved. Every operation I did, it saved. If you are just trying to take a look at your original, you should use Quick View to ensure that you are not adjusting/saving it in any way.

get off work at 9pm tonight, home by 9:20...Lion OS download scheduled for 9:30pm

Well I don't know what changed but it worked. Downloading now. My goal was to spend as little time with Snow Leopard as possible so I wouldn't have to learn two new operating systems.

Consider your Photoshop plug-ins before upgrading to Lion folks.

I haven't upgraded my systems from Snow Leopard to Lion yet. I do remember the Snow Leopard leap made my Nik Silver Efex plug-in unusable running CS5 in 64-bit mode until Nik issued an upgrade. *ETA- Actually I think it was the upgrade to CS5 form CS4 on a Mac that broke Silver Efex, but lesson still learned about possible loss of function with upgrades :)

It seems Nik is now reporting good compatibility with Lion, but if I remember correctly the installers for some of their plug-ins are broken in Lion so it is advised to install them first in Snow Leopard. They say they are working in fixing the installers soon.

Topaz plug-ins seem okay with the upgrade- with a quick glance on their site anyway.

OnOne mentions you should deactivate their already installed plug-ins before the upgrade and reactivate them after installation. They also mention something about hitting the apply button causing crashes- so you may want to wait to upgrade if you are addicted to OnOne for now.

Repartitioned the iMac at work today to make some space for it and test print drivers. If the print drivers from 10.6 don't work under Lion, then I'll get calls about it. I'll get calls anyway, even if they work perfectly. I figure 3-7 workdays until I get my first support call about it.

I'll probably hold off a bit--might as well let Nik catch up first, anyway--I already have enough hassles with their plugins requiring reinstall every other day or so as it is. Plus, Apple's track record of smooth, flawless updates and roll outs has not been stellar of late, as it used to be. I haven't seen a Must Have feature that is urgently needed, so maybe I'll give it a month or so.

I read a detailed review that noted substantial changes to Mail, Calendar, Contacts.

Mine is downloading very slowly. I wouldn't plan on using it tonight.

sigh....

I am on the road with my macbook on a questionable connection. I have to still do the SL update before I can begin to think about Lion.....

It's gonna be a loooooooooooooong night....

Download is complete. Installation in progress.

That's why I brought my computer to work this morning for super fast download speeds :)

As for Nik, I just used HDR Efex Pro and it was perfectly fine (from Aperture, maybe it could be different from Photoshop). I don't have any of their other plugins, but I wouldn't really expect any major setbacks from them.

Note to Safari full screen users, if you are annoyed by not having your bookmarks bar available in full screen, there is an option under the view menu to always see it.
