Ok so i'm looking at lenses now. For stuff to go on my d700 I have the 50mm 1.8, the 24-70 2.8, and the 28-300.

I'm probably going to dump the 28-300.

Now logically I'm looking at the following.

70-200 vrii
14-24 2.8
85mm 1.4G

I'm starting to do weddings and portrait stuff. I shot the 70-200ii when i did a wedding and honestly I was a little let down, I felt like my old Sigma 70-200 was equal if not sharper.

They're all in the same price range so I'm going to have to pick one for now. Just throwing it out there, anyone have any experience with the above or any favorites?

for portrait work, the 85mm is stellar--I have the 85mm 1.4D. which is superb--you might find it suits you, saves you about a thousand dollars (gets you partway to one of those other lenses). I don't know how useful it would be at weddings, though. I'd guess that for weddings you would want to add a 70-200.

If you have the option, renting all three to check em out might be the way to go, help you decide.

+1 for the 85mm - It's amazing for portraits.

+ 1 (or is that 3?) for the 85 1.4 D. Wonderful lens

85's are a great focal length for portraits, but I wouldn't think a prime to be too fun for a wedding. I know there are some who use them exclusively, but I wouldn't (for weddings). Can't comment on the 70-200 vs Sigma's offering. If you're content with the Sigma's performance, though, why worry about that? The 14-24 would be a lens I would definitely pick up because I love wide, but I'm not sure you'd find yourself using it a ton for weddings or portraits because it's a bit too wide.

I would not do weddings without 70-200, period. While I agree with everyone above that 85mm f1.4 is a great portrait lens...being a prime, it is extremely limited in it's use compared with the 70-200 VRII. I would not recommend going with the 3rd party (i.e. Sigma) for this lens as this is one of the Nikon's masterpiece zooms. Tack sharp throughout. Trust me, get a 70-200 first, you will not regret it.

Does anyone have experience in the 85 1.4D versus the new 1.4G ??? Worth the price difference?

I really feel like i should go with the 70-200 first, but i found a good deal on the 1.4D, maybe i could squeeze them both out.

I have the older model...and love it! :-) I haven't used the newer model.
