This is pretty cool. Wonder were it will go from here?

3D Printing

I seem to recall seeing something like this a year or two ago. I think it was for some movie where they used material that was printed out in 3D and worn by the actors, but I don't remember which movie that was.

I've worked in product development for 15 years and this sort of thing was around when I started, though the precision, variety of materials etc has improved, it's not really anything new.

Yeah, it's awesome stuff. There are a bunch of different techniques available. The one ZCorp uses is nice for visual prototypes, as it can add color as part of the process, but the objects aren't really that strong. With different techniques, such as SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) you can actually print metal objects, and that is where the fun begins :)

Check out //www.shapeways.com/ , they offer a variety of different printing techniques. You just upload your 3D model (or select one from their site), choose your material and a week or so later you have the object in the mail :)

Edit:
I have this and green tentacle on my office desk //www.shapeways.com/model/96574/evil_purple_tentacle.html?gid=mg
Very satisfied with them :)

I worked on a movie that made extensive use of 3D printing. It's an amazing tool for producing things quickly, but it has a long way to go before it's practical for most things.

The primary use was when something needed to be made very accurately and in a short amount of time. Sometimes a mold would be created, but that takes time and is also not practical if you only need a few copies of something.

It may not be new, but I would still consider it wiz bang :)

That wrench they made probably cost them over $200 just for the printing material. They also make it look a lot easier then it actually is. I can bet you there were a few people that spent hours touching up the 3D computer model before then sent it off to the printer. The magic of TV transitions!
