Thanks to Nova inexplicably deciding to part with a gracefully-aging gem of a Canon 24-105mm f/4.0L IS lens, I've finally been able to fulfill a longstanding dream of owning one of these. Since I switched to the 5D I haven't really had a reasonable walkaround lens; the Tamron 28-75mm was a sterling performer on the APS-C sensor, but it leaves a lot to be desired on the full frame sensor, in terms of edge and corner performance, so I haven't mounted it very often.

Anyway, I'm really happy with the 24-105, which seems to be performing very well right across the frame. I'm particularly happy to have the IS :-) Here's a shot from yesterday, shot at 45mm —

Yowza! That will do y'all well for landscapes! Here's hoping Penny gives you a chance to mount it once in a while... wait, that came out wrong!

Beautiful, Robert! Like I said, I have anticipated seeing some of your work with my old lens, and this example doesn't disappoint.

As for the reason for selling, it was just redundancy, the old 24-105 vs 24-70 dilemma. I started out in 2005 with the 24-70, replaced it when then longer zoom was introduced, and recently decided to go back to plan "A" and sell the 24-105 for another 24-70. I'm tickled that you're so pleased with the lens, and I can't wait to see what else you do with it. Keep 'em coming!

Great purchase. Congratulations, now we will have to even more on our toes.

Robert... Congrats on the new glass!

I like my 24-105mm. Its the kit lens that came with my camera and is a great low-range "walking around" zoom. At the 24mm end its wide enough for panoramas including strong foreground interest on a 35mm sensor and at the top end it works very well for nearby stuff you always seem to run into while out walking around.

I've migrated mostly to my 16-35mm as my primary lens for landscapes. Its noticeably sharper than the 24-105 and you can do great things with foreground interest while including more of the panorama. That one might make a good choice for your next lens after the 24-105. There is always another coveted lens just over the horizon. LOL!!!! (Mine is the EF 24-70 for my son's photo business)

I use the 17-40mm f/4L — I'd love to have the 16-35mm f/2.8L but the price puts it out of my reach for the forseeable future, if not forever. Still, I've basically got the whole gamut covered now:

17-40mm f/4L for ultra-wide.
24-105mm f/4L IS for mid-range
100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS for reach
100mm f/2.8L IS Macro for close-up
The Lensbaby 3G for funky

Plus we have the 70-200mm f/4L that lives in Penny's bag now.

So there's not really anything left to add to that. Next on the wish-list will be the 5DmkIII when it comes out :-)

Grab an oar... we're in the same boat! I'm happier than I actually thought I'd be with the 17-40. Though the 16-35 would be oh so nice, I cannot see spending the bucks. Normally, if I want a scene that wide with all the detail I can get, I'll shoot a quick hand-held pano with the 24-70 in portrait orientation.

For what its worth, I think you are well covered from 17-400mm with good glass and that the 24-105 greatly strengthens your lower FL zoom range.

If there is such a thing, the 24-105 is one of the best 'general purpose' lenses around!

I'm guessing that lens will spend more time attached to your camera than any other. I just hope it doesn't cause hate and discontent in paradise being more on your camera than Penny's... but then again, it could be a bargaining chip... ifn ya get my drift. LOL!!!
(Did I just say that? Nope, couldn't have been me. I'm to nice to suggest things like that. Someone else must have typed that)

Sure, that's the reason I GOT it; needed a better range of walkaround, and the Tamron 28-75mm doesn't cut it on full=frame. The Tamron's Penny's now, if she wants it; it works very well on APS-C sensors. If she doesn't want it, we'll put it up for sale.
