So. Learned that one should NOT attempt something another DPC'er is VERY good at unless one knows for sure that DPC'er isn't going to enter that thing they are very good at!

I really did try to do something DPC friendly, but missed by a mile. But I did promise Wendy I'll never enter another squirrel. :-)

The Master's work:

14th, 6.3, 85%

The feeble attempt:

56th, 5.4, 35%

Brought this up because lots of folks ask "How do I win ribbons?" and are advised to scan ribbon winners and try to emulate them. Many folks will succeed with this - but it's not all that easy! :-)

And I was far behind both of you with mine here:

The Feeblest attempt:

64th, 5.3, 25%

But I really enjoyed yours both!

a delicious version

Don't kick yourselves too hard. I enjoyed every one of those images. While there is merit in creating your own personal style, there's nothing more eye opining than trying to emulate the masters (yes Wendy, you are the squirrel master!). The amount you take away from it in technique, style, areas that need improving etc far exceed your DP score.

In order to get a decent squirrel score from me, it has to look non-menacing. A squirrel with food in it's grasp is unlikely to jump up and bite me. So Wendy got a 7 from me. You got a 5 because your squirrel looks like it wants to eat me. Actually it looks like it's about to take a bite out of the ankle of whoever is standing that close (you) without providing the correct bribe (food). ROFL! Sorry, the squirrel phobia just won't go away.

On a more serious note... Nothing to be embarrassed about at all. If it was any other animal, it would have gotten at the very least a 7 from me.

Ever since Jaws people have been terrified by Great White Squirrels, and canny soldiers have even used their fearsome visage to strike terror into the hearts of their enemies. Next time make sure the squirrel is obviously secured with a cage or heavy chain to reassure those who might fear a savage nut crackin'.

It's the tail. You call that a tail? That's not a real squirrel's tail.

Sigh. My little "may I have a snack?" squirrel is a terrorist? Lacking a sufficient tail? No wonder I can't do DPC-friendly... I haven't a clue of all the rules! Who sends this stuff out anyway, and how do I get a copy of the memos??

I wouldn't worry the master has got a new Cat and it looks like a squirrel eater to me, give it a few months and there will be no more competition.

Oh sure, now I can't enter pictures of my cats anymore!

Because it's not a real squirrel, it's a ground squirrel... Lives in cracks in the rock, it does. Here's Deb making friends with a couple of 'em, just before she shot them...

To me, it's a matter of perspective. Everyone has seen a squirrel on the ground from 5-6 above it. The photo you liked was shot at eye level with the squirrel. it's not as common for us to see squirrels from that level. Squirrel's eye view. :)

That's right on the money; Wendy gets eyeball-to-eyeball with her squirrels, and lots of times with her birds too...

Obviously people don't know a good shot when they see one. They are not true squirrel connoisseurs. :P

I thought the little guy was adorable! I gave him an 8. I love how big his nose got with the wide angle. I love the begging angle.

My squirrels just have everyone terrified that if they vote me down, I'll send my squirrels after them. Yours was obviously way too sweet. :)

You do have a way with humans, though.

And pigeons.

What they said. This is all covered under DPC Ribboning 101. The only way you could get away with shooting from a common perspective like that is if your subject is doing something extraordinary.

Yes, I can't really expect folks to know he was shot from about a foot away (the shot Robert posted is the position I was in when I took the photo I entered) as it appears to be just another shot from above shot of a ground squirrel with no tail. Next time I will take peanuts and lie on the ground, I promise! :-)

But then Wendy will capture the squirrel biting your nose. :P

This little Douglas Squirrel was quite intent on gorging itself from the bird feeder ...

Yup, that was my first gripe about Deb's photo..... I thought to myself: "If only she had plonked herself down on her belly....."

I, too, like shots from that perspective better.

Might as well post my own single squirrel entry, since everyone else is at it.

And a snapshot from the other day. Tried to follow him around the tree, but he scampered up the trunk. Stalking these guys takes some patience and stealth.

Life is'nt always easy for squirrels. Some of them have to constantly try and avoid pesky snappers.

P.S. Wendy, it's not just the wide angle - that particular type of squirrel just has a really big nose. Somewhere there's a more conventional ground-level shot (sorta) of one of these guys that Robert took.

He is keeping a more respectable distance, you'll notice. But these guys were great little posers. (Yes, there's a squirrel in there somewhere! Follow where the big lens is pointed!)
