Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has seen the following issue with the Canon Speedlite 430EX-II. Essentially, it's like the flash doesn't fire. It certainly goes off (although this could be the "pre-flash" metering flash I've heard of) but the pictures look like the flash hasn't gone off. This isn't slight under-exposure, it's *way* out - probably the best way to explain it is to show some example pictures. These were taken inside at night. There's a single 75W bulb directly above the camera: dim compared to daylight, but it's certainly not "dark"

Description under the photo, but essentially:

1: ISO 100, Manual mode 1/125 at F/5.6, 70mm lens, 430EX in ETTL mode
2: as (1) but with the flash in Manual mode at 1/64 power
3: as (1) but with the flash in Manual mode at 1/8 power
4: as (1) but with the flash in Manual mode at full power
5: ISO 100, Manual mode 1/30 at F/5.6, 70mm lens, 430EX in ETTL mode (so a longer exposure, otherwise as (1)
6: as (1) but with the built-in flash instead of the 430EX

This is paired with an EOS 400D and used to work fine. The fact that 2-4 all look the same leads me to think the flash is knackered. Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Cheers
Buzzy

That does seem very peculiar. Have you cleared all custom settings on the flash?
ETA: And perhaps resetting custom options on your body, as well.

Can you remove the flash from the camera and hit the "pilot" button? See if you can see degrees of brightness according to a manual setting.

If the problem only happens when the flash is plugged in, it could be the camera or the contacts.
If it happens while unplugged from the camera, you know it's the flash.

@adigitialromance - thanks for the suggestion. It looks the same to me at full power and at 1/64, which indicates the flash is the problem. I'll take the flash back to the store and see what they say.

@spiritualspatula - Yep, have cleared all the custom settings on the flash and the camera, but no change.

Yeah, it does seem that there must be something faulty if you have reset all your custom functions. Seems somewhat odd to me. I haven't the foggiest about repair on those, nor would I be apt to take them apart and zap myself with the capacitor. Good luck and it would be great if you updated us on the end result.

Belated update. I sent the flash back to the camera shop. Explained the problem to them, along with sample pictures that clearly demonstrated the issue. They had a look themselves and then sent it to Canon, who replaced the unit with a brand new flash. No specific explanation as to the issue, but the new flash works fine.

Well, glad to hear you got it all straightened out at least. Covered under warranty I take it?
