... posting about a score that is. :-)

I have to say I knew my recent FS entry was not going to appeal to a large audience, but I never expected to miss the boat by such a large margin as it did. Being on vacation in St. Thomas, I had numerous "friendly" landscapes, mountaintop ocean views, blurred water rocky shorelines, etc... but the one I entered just felt more interesting and I had to work for it somewhat in timing the entry of the person in the background while trying to hold the sweetspot long enough.

I did receive three comments during the challenge, and they are certainly appreciated. I was quite pleased when the one from Tim ( keegbow) came in fairly early. Felt like he took away from this shot what I saw in it.

Any thoughts / feedback available by my esteemed colleagues on this one? :-)

I liked the shot, I gave it a 7. Personally I really wised the very front towel bottom part was in focus too, would have in my mind made it an even better shot.

Wish I could give you some useful feedback on why it did so mediocre, but I also gave it a 7.

Here's my opinion.

I don't "get" a lot of lensbaby shots. To me the lensbaby is a cute gimmick, fun to play with but not for "serious" shots that are required of a Free Study. On rare occasions I do see an excellent shot taken with the lensbaby but they are few and far between. And usually the lensbaby effect adds something to the photo, like a feeling of movement or drama, something like that. For a shot of towels on a beach I didn't feel there was anything added by using the lensbaby.

Oh, and I gave the photo a 5. Not bad but not great either.

I loved it! I'm just beginning to experiment with the Lensbaby and this is the kind of picture I'd like to take. The Lensbaby effect makes the image say so much more than it would as a conventional "sharp" shot.

I know you worked hard to get it, but I did not think that the figure between the towels added much to the picture. For me, the picture was about "things" on the beach. The sharp towels contrasted with the blurred sailboat and suggested different ways people make use of the beach.

There have been a few Lensbaby shots that have done well in DPC voting, but not very many. The ones that do well tend to be flowers or pretty scenes that look as though they almost could have been done with selective focus on a conventional lens.

I gave this shot 5.
Very mediocre in my opinion.I don,t really get all the blur which for me adds nothing to the image.

If you got what you wanted from the shot before you entered it, then any problem that the masses have connecting to it is entirely their own. A five is nothing to be ashamed of, so I'm not sure where this large margin put your expectations.

But to your question... I gave it a five. The sweet spot was not well lit and the brightest areas were also the blurred areas. That seemed to keep my eye looking for a place to rest. Also, the composition felt a little careless -- or just too busy. I did like the almost abstract use of color, and I thought maybe that's where you were trying to take this but felt it didn't quite get there. It needed something more. Or something less. Anyway...

I like the Lensbaby look so I gave it a 9. And in my experience, most people (voters) don't like the Lensbaby look. I wonder how many people looked at it and said, "too blurry" and clicked a low score. They probably didn't stop and take a look. The only criticism I'd give is to maybe brighten the towels.

Thank you one and all for your thoughts and comments. You've given me a better understanding of how this shot was perceived.

I appreciate it, sincerely.
