Hello,

Another thread led me to check out the following.

While it is a fact that participants (in a challenge) vote lower on average than the non-participants do in any given challenge, I noticed that in the 7 Deadly Sins challenge, nudes received a full 1.068 points LESS average vote from PARTICIPANTS when compared to NON-PARTICIPANTS.

Why the difference?

i would say that in general participants vote lower.

If i had to make assumptions, I would say that people are either:

a) comparing other photographs to their own (ie, a photo of the same quality =5) or
b) adjusting their votes based on their own scores, ie, leveling themselves.

voters who aren't participating really have nothing to lose.

I figured people would either love or hate my entry. In the" Seven deadly sins" there where only around 50 participants and 241 people voted on my image. Lowballing the competition may have played a roll or the image was "interesting" but not outstanding, I stayed just above 6.0x most of the week while others where experiencing huge changes in their scores, but I got very few comments.
My commenters beat the NON-Participants by another 1+ points to 8.0 avg (my personal fan club :) )

Your assertion of "fact" is a non-starter: I have just as many entries where participants voted higher than non-participants as the reverse, and a large number where the difference between the votes was negligible.

Well then what is your opinion on the on my 1 point difference on the nudes in this thread?

This is not true as you are incorrect on the counts of your own challenges.

You had 47 Challenge Entries.

12 (26%) - Voted Higher by Participants
35 (74%) - Voted Higher by NON-Participants

5.4703 - Avg Vote by Participants
5.6377 - Avg Vote by NON-Participants

So, 74% of the time Non-Participants voted higher on your images with an Avg vote of 0.2 higher.

Also, interestingly enough, you only had 12 Challenges where the difference in vote was less then 0.1

Im sorry, im a numbers guy, had to do it.. I couldn't help myself.. I was tempted to do kenskid's as well, but the fun fell away :)

I went back a few recent challenges, but wasn't gonna spend time going thru a couple years worth. I'll amend my statement to say that in the last several challenges, it was about even-steven. But kudos for your diligence, if not for your valuation of your own time :-)

It's a sickness really, but I can admit it :)

Thanks for that number crunching. I was a little of a sceptic but took him at his word. Anyway....the question still is ....why the descrepency?

Well, in my opinion, participants judge more critically, as they have more vested into it.

I have no idea, I for some reason feel when looking at them, that they are trying to get points by showing nudity.. not sure I voted harder for it as I dont think I did, but I get that feeling when I am looking at them, I find that you can be just as creative without it. Not that I am opposed to it by any means. Just a feeling looking back in retrospect. Ill have to go and look at how I voted now...

Nudes tend to polarize people a bit, with some members openly stating that they vote all nudes a 1, period. Nudes tend to get a LOT of views compared to "regular" images. There are a number of other variables: the quality (artistic, technical) of the nude images, the suitability of each separate one to the actual challenge theme, the perception by some that nudity/sexuality is associated with sin, the rejection of that notion by others, etc. Your statistic, while of momentary interest, leads only to speculation about all the variables, in addition to the participant/non-participant variable.

So, my opinion is that I have no opinion on the 1 point difference. I am neither surprised nor un-surprised, concerned nor unconcerned. It seems like a chance to get wrapped around the axel for the sake of getting wrapped around the axel.

Also interesting to note, in the previous 7 Deadly Sins challenges, there were not as many nudes, also the point gap between them was not nearly as much as this time around.

New members who dont like nudes I guess :)
