I'm thinking about getting a point and shoot camera. I love my 50D. It takes amazing pictures, but I feel skittish about taking it with me on long bike rides - or any bike ride at all for that matter. Yet, I often find myself wishing I could stop and shoot a picture. Plus, there's a possibility of a cross country trip this summer, and just because of the kind of accomodations I don't want to bring anything as blatantly expensive or hard to hide as my 50D.

Any suggestions? I seem to remember someone around here doing really amazing things with a Panasonic?

After reading many reviews and comparing I just ordered the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25V, just 10 minutes ago... :)

Planning to give it as a gift to my wife for Mother's Day... But I'll use it too, of course...

This is an upgrade to the FH20 that was selected Point and Shoot Camera of the Year 2010 in many sites and magazines...

I recently bought a Powershot G11 to use when bike riding and to keep in my truck when driving to work. It shoots RAW, so it fits right into the workflow I have established for my DSLR. The current model is the G12 and the Powershot S90 and S95 have the same guts in an even smaller body. Pretty darn good pics for a compact. Really happy with it. I've even been using it for some challenge entries. Found mine on Craigslist for $325.

The Panasonic LX3/LX5 are also both very nice, very capable cameras. I was pretty astonished with mine. I no longer feel bad about not taking my D300 on every climb and backpacking trip since the quality of the LX3 isn't nearly so disparate. Lots of awesome features in it.
Here are some straight from camera shots, using the Dynamic BW setting (some are full res).
And here's a thread with some discussion on Panasonics

ETA: When I first got it, I didn't think of how awesome the ability to change aspect ratio would be, but after having it, I love that feature soooo much. Mostly shoot in 16:9 though, awesome for landscapes.

I got the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20K. Amazon sent me an email offering me a deal too good to refuse on it. I got it for like half of what it would have cost eotherwise because I got it refurbished.

I just have been through the same exercise and bought Canon S95. The key reasons:
1. shoots in RAW
2. after market grip (very useful for taking shots while cycling)
3. after market filter adapter
4. 195g with battery (half weight of G12)

1. and 3. can take it beyond the standard P&S.

There is a comparison of high end compacts at:
