Hi there,

We had a great time at the Vasquez Rocks and at Balboa Park on July 11th; so, now it's time to start thinking about where to go next? I'll be packing, moving, vacationing and unpacking from now until August 16th, so my next outing will have to be on or after August 22nd.

Of course you are welcome to go somewhere without me, but if you all want to get together on August 22nd, I am game. Where should we go? What about that beach Eric mentioned?

Any thoughts? Anyone else want to join us?

Wow, we've only just completed outing #3 and we're already planning #4! :) I need to hurry up and post process my photos. Seriously, I still need to finish my Venice shots and then there's the ones from Vasquez rocks etc.

I'm not really picky about where we go. The beach Eric mentioned or even the wedge at Newport are good ideas. And if you feel like spending a bit of money, we could go to Catalina. A friend of mine says the nearest access port to the Channel Islands is Ventura not Santa Barbara like I originally thought. I might go there on my own as a mini/local vacation one weekend.

I know Arie mentioned going to Disneyland and the equestrian center in Burbank but the park fees are not my favorite thing. I haven't been there in a few years and back then it was over $40/day. By now I'm sure it's over $50.

As usual, I'm pretty much open for just about anything. Ideas and suggestions?

I'm not picky about where we go either. The Wedge sounds interesting as well, as it's been a while since I have been there. It's also near Balboa Bay, so there is the possibility of some boat shots as well. Other ideas might include the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, The L.A. Zoo and Exposition Park in Los Angeles. I also still like the idea of buying a Metro Pass for the day and hitting multiple locations and areas (Downtown, Hollywood, Universal, etc). This may be better for later on as I know you guys hit Downtown already recently.

So, since it's still hot out, summer... why don't we hit up that beach Eric told us about. Is that near the wedge? What's the wedge again? I think that would be best, until it gets cooler out at least. We could then try the Stables and nearby Burbank Ranches in September. I am up for Catelina one day, but i have to go there with my husband first, and that's not going to happen anytime soon, so I think I'll pass on that idea for a while.

So, the beach or wedge?

Actually, I need to check that date first but if I'm available, I'm all for the beach. Or the Metro pass. Or whatever. :) Personally, I'd rather do the beach first then we can do city stuff when it gets cooler.

Beach seems to be it then. I will have to check the date as well before I commit. El Matador (Eric's suggestion) is in (or near) Ventura County. I believe he said it was about 15 or 20 minutes North of Malibu. The Wedge is in Newport Beach, which is down in Orange County. It really isn't feasible to hit both on the same day unless you want to do some major driving.

El Matador is good with me :) We can take the Canyon Roads out and get photos through there as well :)

El Matador sounds good. check out my link to some photos I have taken of El Matador Beach in the past.

The Back Bay is very close to the Newport wedge; another great place to do nature photography.

That looks cool too. I have never heard of this place, but now it's going on my to-do list as well.

Will they let us take photos at the Orange County Fair? That would be awesome! Weird Al is playing the Fair and I'd like to go see him on Thurs or Friday of next week... He's playing from the 20th to the 24th.

Photograpy is allowed if for your own personal use.

I asked about tripod/monopod, at first was told no but security said it would be fine. They stressed "Personal use".

So we can bring a tripod to the fair? When are you going? Or did you already go?
07/15/2004 05:10:28 PM · #19
I'm going Saturday, but may go again. I work with a personal friend of Weird Al who has requested a number of tickets to see the show.

If there is a lot of freedom to take photographs I'll definately make more than one trip. Again, regarding tripods/monopods; I was at first told no but later in the conversation security said it would not be a problem. At the gate I think it could go either way, if I'm told it is not allowed I'll ask they contact their manager since they told me they would be allowed on the phone.

I have met Al quite a few times. I had a great picture of he & I on my couch being silly, but my school newspaper lost it when they did a write up on him back in high school 9 years ago. My sister is friends with Al, but she only has his NY number, not his cell... so she can't reach him right now. So, I wrote him an email. I am not sure he'll check it before the show, but I hope he does. I asked him if I could photograph the show for fun on the 22nd or 23rd. I really would love to try concert photography!! We'll see if he writes back. I may just show up and ask him if i can find him before the show.

OH OH I'd love to go too, if I could! Can you ask if you can bring a friend? :)
07/15/2004 09:18:08 PM · #22
Hope it works out for you Arielle. My co-worker was classmates with Al and they frequently stay in touch. He will likely be able to take photographs during the show, but for myself I would not ask. It's likely that I won't see the show, unless I make a second visit.

I haven't heard back from Al yet. I don't think he's checking his email right now. I'm just going to try to show up and find him before the show, if possible. Greg, you can come with me, but i don't know if we can take pictures. I am still not sure if I am going to go thurs or fri yet. I have to check with bobby to see his schedule. I'll get back to you. :)

So, what's the favorite, El Matador or the Wedge, for August? Did you all decide on which date might work best for you? Let me know your thoughts. I have traffic school on Aug 28th now so that day's out. Damn Glendale police!!! bah!
